I'm wondering what other's thoughts are on using a grunt tube. Here's some questions to get a better understanding of what I'm wanting to know.

Wait until a buck is seen walking away then try and turn him?

or

Grunt periodically throughout the hunt?

Loud or Soft?

Long or Short?

Time of Year dictate your grunting style?

Feel free to add and answer your own question related to when you'd get to gruntin.

I have spooked a lot more deer using a grunt call. I bring one and more often than not , when I use it I see less deer. Have I seen it work , yes but not often. And for those who are going to bash me for saying that..... I guess that the deer I hunt are just smarter than the ones that will just walk in to a vibrating piece of plastic!

Has more to do with your buck:doe ratio. If you have close to a 1:1 ratio or better, your responses will be alot better than say Rankin county where there are more pine goats(does) running around than bucks.

Use it loud and often unless the deer is within 50 yds and you want to get a better look than just grunt normal 2 times. Last year I believe I called up around 30 bucks this year we probally around 20 so far. I call often too, less than every 10 min. this time of year. Bucks are cruising and you never never knows when one is 100 yards away cruising and you cant see him. Works for me anyway.

I use to believe deer didn't really respond to calling in MS but the last few years my opinions have changed, and it may very well being the deer herds I hunt are alot better than years ago.

Had more success just bleating and not using the grunt. I have figured out that the softer grunts that you wouldn't think the buck could hear work alot better than the loud ones.

I had never had much luck with a grunt call til I got the Primos Buck Roar. I mainly use it just like an ordinary grunt call. I have called in several bucks this year just grunting without seeing them. I have also had luck getting the ones I have seen closer. I usually use long grunts but during the rut throw in some shorter tending grunts and if a mature buck hears it and is alone he is coming. You do need a good buck:doe ratio for the most success.

I always carry one and the primos can, regardless. The only time I will use mine is during the pre-rut and rut stages though. Bucks are establishing dominance, protecting their territory/doe's, and are most vulnerable to be fooled. I try to sound as if a buck is tending a doe; either flip the can 2 or 3 times followed by longer drawn out grunts if I am blind calling. If I see a buck cruising away either with or without a doe, I will grunt just loud enough for him to hear it, not enough to surprise him. My largest deer to date was harvested using the first method.

I noticed the same thing, when I got the buck roar I began calling up bucks and a few does every now and then too.

Been using grunt calls since the mid 80's i will grunt bout every 30-50 yds if walkin in a good piece before daylight...knowing you gona make some noise pop few twigs and such might as well make them think its just another deer walkin round...I will grunt bout every 20min on the stand during the rut and prerut never know when one is within hearin distance just out of site and maybe goin the other direction from you......If you use scents i would suggest harmon doe rut or dominant buck it has a spray top and you can spray down some botton ball or gun cleaning swabs to cover ur scent have had deer walk in lookin for the scent and never had one spook on it either like some of the others on the market.........
