I am in the market for a new pup and am very interested in a weimaraner. I was wondering if anyone on here has a "werm" they hunt with or just has one as a pet?

Good buddy of mine has a female thats about 5 years old now..I'll check with him to find out hows she's doing. I do know that when he started her he had some issues with the thick head. and agressive nature of the dog. He still has her so she must of came out ok. I'll send a email and update

thick headed and an aggressive nature---sounds just like me.
Thats what I have heard about them. But I also heard that if you can get around those obstacles, you have an extremely good hunting dog.

Are you talkin' about duck huntin' with one? One of my friends has one but he doesn't take the cold water very well. He uses him to bird hunt with and an occasional early season teal. He trained him himself so they must be fairly intelligent...........

I can tell you and your buddies are like me and my buddies--ruff on each other.
I was wanting a "werm" to hunt both ducks and quail. A true hunting weimaraner is suppused to be able to do both easily, along with tracking large game. I, like you, wonder how they would hold up in the cold water.

I have a female about two years old as a pet. She happens to be extremely laid back for weimer, and I have always thought that she would
make a hell of a dove dog, however I also have a black lab I hunt with so
I have never had time to train her. She loves to watch birds in the back yard and will point them instinctively. She is a good swimmer but I don't think they would make a good duck dog way too cold for their short hair.

My neighbor across the street has one. It eats my trash at least once a week and howls 24 hours a day. I hope there not all like that!

Gadwall 2 in all my travels I have not seen one of those dogs. That is not to say they are not good hunting dogs. If you want to be different then I would say get one. But if you want a really true hunting dog for ducks and quail I would stick to a lab. Labs are the best in the water and are fair at quail but are easy to train. That is just my opinion.

If it is diversity you are looking for get a Boykin. I have only had one for about 6 weeks now, and she is the best conversation piece I have had, since my Benelli's. Her mother and Grandfather are award winning upland dogs, and her father is one heck of a duck dog. She is only about 3 months old now and her will to please is incredible. Just a little too smart sometimes.
Check them out.

I have hunted sharptails and huns over one. Seemed like an ok bird dog. Several friends of mine had them growing up. They were not trained, just big ole frisky gray dogs.

They will not handle the cold water!! They are great for just dove hunting, but when they get to the mid January water, you can count them out!!

I got one last christmas. They are very demanding dogs. I hope you know what you are getting into. I've been trying to train mine to be able to duck or bird hunt with him. It may just be the pup in him but he seems to get distracted easy, but other than that he is really a good dog. really clumsy at first but he's catching on. I hope to take him out next year, but will try a little this season just to try to break him in. Another warning they chew a lot. If you need any info on a good breeder pm me.
