Internet Speed?

Lady on the phone says she can double my speed from 3.0 to 6.0?

Now I don't have a clue what that is, but I like fast. I told her I was going to make sure she wan't trying to sell me some ocean front property here in MO and get back to her.

Any idea if this will be a noticeable improvement?

I have a 6 meg at my house, but that's just bc i have a web server and a few other machines running. not sure what the price difference will be but yeah your upload and download times will pick up a good bit depending on how many PC share the net connection. if you're only using one PC it may not make that much of a difference as most sites you DL from or what knot have Bandwidth limiters that will only allow you to pull 100-200kb/sec of their available max.

Run three computers here at the office and the others aren't suppose to download anything not work related. Its not but like 10 bucks a month, but everything runs pretty quick already without alot of junk downloaded on computer.

They don't necessary have to download to use up some of that 3mb, searching the web loading pages uses it too. Anytime you click that little IE/Firefox icon there goes some bandwidth.

Anytime you surf or do anything on the internet with your browser, you are downloading information to your computer.

Also keep in mind that when we talk about ADSL 1.5M, 3M and 6M speed, we are refering to bandwidth, not data speed persay.

Bandwidth relates to the highway at which your data runs on. Let's say you have a highway with a speed limit of 80 miles per hour, but the high way is only two lanes, one lane going north and the other lane going south. Although the speed is 80 miles per hour, it will still take you awhile to get from location A-Z. Oh, and YOU CAN'T PASS!!!

Ok, now lets make it a three lane road with one lane going north and two lanes going south. We are still at 80 miles per hour, but our time to get from north to south has picked up as there is less traffic jams to deal with because our lanes have increased, but going from south to north has still got a good bit of traffic jams on it since there is only one lane.

These lanes are our bandwidth. As bandwidth increases so does the amount of data that can reach us while maintaining the same speed limit.

With ADSL, Asymmetric Data Subscriber Loop, we run fewer lanes to your server, but increase our lanes with information coming to you. With 6Mbps service, there is 6Mbps (downstream) download data to you and 604kbps (upstream) data going to your server/requested site. So, when that server/site receives the request that you want data from them, there is a lot more room for you to receive this data. This difference in speed is what the Asymmetric means; it is not symmectric/same.

So, when someone states they have this internet speed or that internet speed, there miles per hour have not necessarily increased, their highway width (bandwidth) has increased.

All kidding aside, if you do not play a lot of online games or download a lot of high bandwidth information or have numerous computers on your network, then you will probably never see the difference except in your bill.
