Labs retrieving expectancy?

Postby H20fowlkiller » Thu Nov 06, 2008 9:38 pm

I saw on another forum where a guy asked how long his lab should be good for and was responded to with 8-9 yrs. Im curious on how accurate yal would say this is.

I have hunted with 12 year old labs who were doing the work several times. I think it depends on lots of factors.
So many ducks, so little time....

I've got a 12 year old CLM that is so arthritic that there's no way he would ever be able to chase down a crippled duck, but he does still get the occasional tennis ball or bumper.

Assuming:
Proper health care, good diet and conditioning, no genetic problems like bad hips...I would expect to be able to hunt them in some fashion til at LEAST 11 years old. But, like people, they're all different so it depends on the dog...and luck.

anything past 10-11 is borrowed time....be very proud of it.
