And, so begins what I hope to be my last year of employment.

The kids come back to school today, so I count this as the official first day of my last year to be employed full-time in education. Man, it sure doesn't seem like 30 years! I can honestly say that I loved the vast majority of the days I worked.
The things I will miss: Friday night lights, homecoming, prom, pep rallies, having hot biscuits ready for me every morning, graduation
Things I will not miss: Cheerleader tryouts, end of semester grade reporting, grading essays, idiot parents, kids who are too far gone to help
The best days: The days my kids graduated, winning state championships, the first day of school when kids came back to school, the last day of school when kids go home for the summer
The worst days: the day my kids got on the "big twinkie" for the first time, every day that I had to fire a teacher or expell a kid
The absolute worst days: Columbine, 9/11, any day a kid was hurt
But I've got untill May 31 to enjoy and soak it all in. Hard to believe it really is the "beginning of the end." Can't decide if I'm happy or sad...probably both!

Yours is ending and my wife's is just beginning, that's pretty neat. Today is her first day at class with students. all next week they will be drilling the school handbook to the students and then the following week starts the teaching.
Crow, are you a principal? Did you start out teaching, if so what grade/subject?

I can still remember past teachers and Principles from my high school career.
I still have fond memories of those that I looked up to and cared enough for me to do better.
What a tribute to life to have affected so many lives. Good luck on your last year and I hope it will be the best one you have ever had.

Crow thanks for what you have done. It amazes me how well I still remember my good teachers and principals. They have impacted my life in so many ways and they still do when I see them. Here in Vicksburg we had a black senior English teacher that noone wanted to be in here class cause she was so tough. Mrs. Johnson, well you guessed it, I was picked to be in her class. Her famous saying to every class was I HOLD THE KEY TO YOUR GADUATION. I remember when she called my name the first day of class she said Jim Cole, I said here. She looked at me and said, Are you Jimmy's boy. I said yes mam. She said we gonna get along real good, I use to change your diapers when you were a baby. I was embarassed as hell but believe it or not I don't know if I would have passed if she didn't know my father so well. My grades started slippin in and she gave a call to my daddy. Aftter the 3 of us had a coming to meet Jesus meeting I passed her class with a B. It's teachers and administrators such as her that we need more of.
I still see Mrs. Johnson pretty regular here in Vicksburg and think back and everytime I see here I realize I probablly wouldn't have made it through college if she wasn't placed in my life.

Congrats and thanks..
Kids come back for my Wife today.. She worked 12 hours straigh yesturday trying to get the room ready and meet all the kids parents and attend all the workshops you have to do.. we had to run by the store last night and she about fell asleep on the way home..
I keep telling her she only has 19 years left before she can retire at age 48.. Then she can go work at a private school and draw 2 paychecks.. That way I can retire at 55 and do lots more hunting..
She is not to keen on this plan for some reason???

Maybe you could add in that you will clean the house like you've been doing recently.

Started year number 10 yesterday, gets alittle easier every year. Cwinkler I got the same plan I will be 50 when I get 28 years an I will call in quits. Smart lady 10 years ago talked me into taking 200 bucks a month out of my check to put into the state deferred compensation before i ever got my first check so that I would never see it. Been doing in 10 years now an the way its going I will be able to hang it up at 50. Maybe just find some odd jobs.

Hotty Toddy yes she was the English teacher and that was always the joke about the gaduation phrase. But I tell you she was tuff of students and spoke her mind especially to the blacks with all their hip hop stuff and the way they dressed. She didn't care who you were she told it like it was.

Crow,
Thanks to you for teaching "our" kids. I know you are over in GA, but a thanks needs to go out to all that have such an inportant job as the shaping of young minds so they can go on to be productive citizens. We pay our teachers so little for what we expect of them. God bless and keep you this year and next year some of us are going to have to stop and see you in whatever town you settle in!

You ARE coming back to 'sippi I gather?
