Skeet or Trap?

Ok, I have never shot either. But after the lack of ducks this past season where every shot needed to count, I was thinking of taking it up. What is the difference between the two? Is there anywhere near Jackson that I could go? Thanks

Skeet has more variety than Trap, Crossing birds vs all going away birds. you dont get to shoot to many Ducks going strait away
If you want a challange try Sporting Clays.

Skeet would be my preference of the two for duck hunting practice. With trap you stand at 5 different stations 15 yards behind the trap and all of the targets are rising and going away from you. This is great for quail hunting practice. Skeet has a high tower with a trap in it and a low tower with a trap in it with shooting stations in a semicircular configuration from one tower to the other. Most shots are crossing, however the targets are shot at really close range with a very open choke.
Sporting clays would be the best of all in that it mimics hunting situations with a variety of angles and ranges to target. There used to be a skeet range down around Byrum where the old "swinging bridge" going over the Pearl River was located. I haven't been there in years though, so I don't know the current status of that.

The best thing for you would be to find a club with 5 stand setup. It is a condensed version of sporting clays, some close shots, some long shots. Try Kearny Part north of Jackson.

GC is right about a good 5 stand
Shooting a good 5 stand is a way to have a good time with good folkes at one time

Not too mention it will make mice out of most shooters. Five stand, to me, is the hardest game in town. (I would consider myself to have an advanced novice sport shooter's knowledge in making such a claim)

Wildfowler, Sounds to me like you are a sandbagger like GC.

You should go ahead and be a man and declare to a Master level shooter

jackson has a shooting club that has what you would be looking for (traps, skeet, and 5 stand). Capital Gun Cub, it is located off of west county line rd on Billy Bell Rd. West County Line is behind target and is also where Togalloo College is located. If you get on west countyling behind target. you will head west until you go over the railroad tracks. as soon as you go over the tracks start looking to the right for a Capital Gun Club sign. the phone number should be in the book. they are open thurs (afternoon), fri (afternoon), sat, and sunday I think. I have shot there a couple of times and really enjoyed it.
good luck

Thanks dizz. I know that route well, however I have never seen the sign. Maybe cause I have never been looking. Anyways, what are the rates? Do you know? This would be perfect, not too far from my house. Thanks everyone for their input on this matter.

Has anyone tried the sporting clays at tunica? They have a duck hunting version called duck blitz or something like that. Heard it was a lot of fun.

A couple of friends from work and I went to the Willows in tunica a couple of times last spring. They have 2 clay's courses, 5 stand, skeet, trap, and one other game but I can't remember the name. They also have the DUCK FLUSH. Other than shooting at real ducks, that was the most fun I've had shooting since i first shot a gun when i was 10. It was so much fun we paid to play twice the last time we went. I highly recomend it.
