Possible Outboard w/ pics

Postby DeltaCotton12 » Sun Apr 20, 2008 9:37 pm

Hey guys, a lady called me today ad said she has a 2000 merc, 2 stroke, oil injected outboard. i recieved pictures today, does that water line on the foot affect anything? What do i need to look into to ensure i'm getting a good buy? Compression, Water pump, idle, weird noises??

She said to make an offer, from what i can see, the retail, according to http://www.nadaguides.com/ this motor retails at 1,285 low retail and high is 1,445. so were would y'all start?.

Was it used in any saltwater? Check the oil in the foot and compression from the motor defintely.

I have a 2002 Merc 25 and have not had any trouble with it. If the oil and compression are ok I would take it for a test run if possible and run it pretty hard, idleing, full speed and reverse, if it is still on the boat. If not find a local marine shop and have them check it. Better safe than broke down. The motor looks good and if it runs good I think it would be a steal at the low price. Just my .02 though. Good luck

Would definitely unscrew the lower unit drain plug to see if milky-white lube comes out - if so, water is in the lower unit and not good. Can be checked in less than a minute. Also, rotate the prop by hand (back and forth) and listen for any "grinding" type sounds.

Why are they selling the motor? Do they have the service history?

Thought the cowl looked short. Did some checking. This is the 2 cyl 40. [b]NOT[b] the larger 3 cyl that most people are familier with. It's the 3 cyl 40-50-60 that most people want. Nothing wrong with the 2 cyl, but it will be down on torque compared to the 3 cyl model.

She said the lower unit oil was changed last month, no signs of milky substance. They are selling the boat because they'd like to be able to pull an inner tube behind the pontoon. Said the motor was tuned up sometime in march, shop said everything looked well. motor runs great. motor was last run on Apr 12th, no problems.

they currently have pontoon controls for it, i'd only assume i'd need side mount controls?

I see the serial number, but dont know the model number and cant locate this serial on part webpages to look for the controls. any suggestions?

I threw out an offer of 1100...

they could have changed the foot oil in prep for a sale.....check compression, and run the fire out of it, since its still on the boat!!!!! then check foot oil....look for excess smoking and odd sounds...check out the plugs this will always give you a good idea of the last time the motor was serviced....remember the motor will probably crank right up as she sits, or the folks wouldnt have a chance of selling it....so I would definetly run it for at least 30 minutes....offer to pay for the gas if the gripe...

yes that is the correct control box. Mighty long lead on it though. You probably wouldn't need over 8 or 9 footer. That would end with A8 or A9 measure your boat and then buy the proper length. That's not a great deal on them though. They sell for around 229 new at a dealer. You will also need 2 control cables Teleflex number cc179-footage (whatever length you need will be the last 2 numbers) IE. CC179-13 would be 13 foot cables. You most likley will have to change the prop too. A prop for that motor to push a pontoon will be way to short a pitch to put on a regular boat. That motor should take at least a 14p prop maybe even up to a 16 depending on the size of the boat you are going to put it on. The proper way to prop it is hook up a tach to it and make sure it turns the proper RPMS (5500) at wide open throttle with a medium load in the boat you are going to use it on. There is a tach harness already made into that control box. All you would need to do is borrow one from a shop to set it by. You did notice that was a long shaft motor? You must have a 20 ro 21" transom for it to work. It's worth every penny of 1100 if you can get it for that. You will have to put appx another 400 with it time you get it rigged with controls.
