I have decided to pull the trigger and get my camera(Cannon Rebel XTI aka 400D) I plan on purchaseing it the first of May when I get some birthday $$$$ and my tax return. Now I am trying to decide which lense I want, and I may splurge and get 2, one for normal close shots and one for some distance. I am on a limited budget so I really only need to get 1 and learn with it before I spend the $$$$ and go crazy with it all. The shots I will take mostly will be of wildlife and hunting and fishing scenes, but I am also going to be making a plant ID book next year for my woody plants class so I want to beable to take nice clear pictures of trees and shrubs for that class also. Any and all help will be greatly appriciated.
Thanks alot,
Robert

Any really good lens is not going to be cheap so you may want to expect atleast $500
You should be able to get a decent 300mm for under that...Or you can get a nicer 300mm or a decent 400mm for around $1000 to $1600 almost all options lead to a dent in the pocket.

Best two general purpose lenses: 24-70 2.8 L and 70-200 2.8 L
Best two on a budget (but still not cheap):

my dad has a few lensesfrom a cannon and his secretary's husband owns a photo studio and he said they would fit so I'm going to look at them and see what they are and hopefully I will be able to use them also
