While on the lake

Postby Tedl10 » Sun Apr 06, 2008 10:55 pm

Tj was kind enough to get me out for an afternoon to fish today. I managed to salvage two shots while out there. CC very much welcome.

Very nice terapin photo, Theodore.

I tried to snap some shots of turtles today but they didn't turn out too well. I'm looking for an award-winning soft-shelled turtle photo, or better yet, a huge gator snapper posing for me.

I like the first one. The second one looks a little out of focus, or maybe just heavily cropped. The second one also lacks the contrast need to make it a great photo. The green turtle head, no puns here guys, is poking out into green water. The green on green is uninteresting to my eye. In the first one, the water is more yellow, and contrasts better. I think the pic would look better shot from a lower angle too. But then you'd have to get wet :)

Check out the expression he has on his face in the second pic, he look's PISSED.

Probably thinking, "Dude, do you know how long it took to get up here? And now I'm about to just roll back off in that cold water, all b/c you want my picture."

Yes, I'm very good at reading turtle body language.

Nobody ever critiques my photos. Don't be afraid of me guys. I'm not the living legend those Brandon boys say I am.

Ted, i'm glad to see you were able to get a brief respite....

as for the shots, one hint is that you might want to do two things, first try shooting with the lens stopped down a bit (it looks like you were shooting at f5.6 in the top shot), by stopping down a bit to say f6.3, f7.1, or even f8, this lens in my experience is a bit soft at f5.6 (some copies more than others) and I generally like to shoot stopped down to maximize the sharpness...it also gives your camera more margin for error with its focus, because cameras(particularly in my experience the pro-sumer canon's) tend to miss focus sometimes... you could also bump your ISO up to 400 or even 800 to help keep the shutter speed high enough (looks like 1/125 on the first, which IMO even with IS is getting kind of low at 400mm).... just a couple of technical things to think about....

I really like the composition of the first, the second is not as strong....

Ditto

Looks like the second is a crop of the first with a little more saturation. It shows front focus more and the stripe under the eye is distractingly bright making the rest of the head blend into the background a bit.

I like the first one better, but way to go getting out there. could be too busy to take pics right now like me and sitting here jealous. Keep it up man.
