Underground dog fence question

Postby tuscaloosahunter » Mon Mar 17, 2008 2:03 pm

Guys,

I'm now the proud owner of a fully trained English Setter bird dog. I'm looking into installing an underground electric fence. I've found one on the internet that says you can also install it above ground with lawn staples and the root system of your lawn will grow over it in 7-10 days. Any of you have any experience with these, underground or above ground? Do they work, will my dog take out after a deer that happens to walk by and never be seen again? Any input appreciated, good or bad. TIA.

Trained dog?

I would recommend a dog kennel. I don't have any experience with the fence you're talking about, just stating my opinion.
If I don't do it, I ain't gettin nun.......So i'm doing it

We had an underground years ago when they first came out and my pup would jump through it and you could see her getting zapped as she hopped over it.

The newer models might be improved, but if I get another dog I'm using a kennel.

We have an underground fence in the backyard to keep the dogs off the porch and out of the flower beds. We just put it up next to the house and the rest of the yard has regular fencing. My lab will bow up with the gate open and blow through it to get to me. She just takes it. I feal like crap when she does that cause she's so happy to be with me after that.

I don't think it would work if we used it for the whole yard instead of just keeping them out of the flowers and porch.

I have had success with underground fences if you follow the training regiment that they outline in the literature (about 3 weeks if I recall).

I do not have any experience with the system you described that the wire is above ground.

Good luck!

Just put a sport dog under ground fence up to keep the dogs in the rod iron fence. That babies got some juice. It will work up to 100 acres! They won't be digging out no more. If anybody needs some add a collars I got some. I have mine running in the channel iron at the bottom of the fence and on top of the ground along the back flower beds and it works fine.

Petsafe Radio Fence. No wires to bury. Just put collar on and set distance on transmitter (adjustable for how far to let them roam). I have two black labs on one system and no problems after 6 months. Have a friend with a dog on one also with no problems.

I also have the wireless pet safe system, works like a charm. Only one hiccup and that cured it.
