I am working a Standard in his first season. Just wondering if I'm the only one trying to get some street cred back in this breed.

I'm not hating on your dog, but I believe everyone in this forum that owns a silver lab just thanked God. Finally people will have someone else to talk about. Check out some of those threads, then ask yourself...Would anybody say they hunted a poodle when a guy w/ a different color lab gets shat on in this forum.

i'm fairly certain that standard poodles have a rich history of hunting, particularly on the east coast.

I've not heard of someone hunting a standard poodle since Hoot Gibson, the highly acclaimed Arkansas waterfowl guide that was killing snow geese over decoys long, long before it was mainstream. Have seen video of that dog in action, and have seen the dog on several occaisons and was impressed. Please post some hunting pictures.

I commend you on trying to bring back working poodles. I know there are a few breeders in the US focusing on working poodles. I look forward to seeing some pics of your dog.

I would like to read discussion on breed characteristics, tendecies, temperament, physical attributes, etc.

Physically hardy? Athletic? Intelligence? Trainability? Stuff like that.

Never would've asked without this thread but now I'm curious all of the sudden.

Thanks,
Troy

Standard poodles were the first duck dogs. They were retrieving long before labs came along. Would I want to come on here and claim to hunt one? Not on your life. :D
Good luck with it and let us know how it works out.

I've judged several Regional Poodle Specialty Hunt Tests and I know a couple of Ladies that have Poodles and hunt them and run Tests with them. They are fun to watch.

At the first regional Specialty I judged a few years ago, there was even a Miniature entered. He was the first Mini to get a WCX. That little 12 lb. dog retrieved a full sized duck just like the big dogs did. The grass on the land test was taller than he was and he fought hard through pond weeds to make his retrieves on land. He was something else!
