With the puddle ducks being close to non-existent in our hunting area for the past couple of weeks, I decided to go after some divers on the catfish ponds. I was pretty excited just to bag a drake canvasback, but for him to be wearing jewelry...WOW  8)
See pics ...

Show 'em some pics of the paper-thin band.

I want to know how old it is when you hear back from the BBL.

I did find about 2 dozen today. Maybe more will show up this week.

Awesome! Guys, if you've never had grilled Canvasback, it is far and above, the best I've put in my mouth.

The band is so well worn that it was difficult to read any of the numbers. The last digit is completely worn off. The main office at the Bird Band place could not give me any info, but with the help of Scott Baker at MDWFP and his contact at the USFW Lab we were able to do some deciphering and come up with the fact that the band belongs to one of four canvasback drakes all banded in 1994 in Saskatchewan, CA. Two of the drakes were already mature ducks, so the band is 14 years old, but the duck may be older than that!!

Get that boy mounted. I've got one here in my office and he is awesome. Get in touch with Shane Smith in Bridgeport, AL (256-495-2596). He is an awesome taxidermist, won the 1998 National Champ. Hunts Can's quite frequently. You won't believe his work. Also, try him at http://www.birdtaxidermy@aol.com

Thanks for that info. I have seen his ducks at a DU show and was wondering how to locate him.

The band was so thin, that there were two "notches" worn down in it. One apparently where the band rode on the front of the leg and the other where it rested against the hind toe.

Eagle showed me the duck on Sunday. Very cool!
