I would like to get 28 ga gas operated auto for less recoil any suggestions?????

A 20ga. gas operated like an 1100 has very little recoil.

Look for some old Remington 1100 skeet guns for 28 ga. A 20 with light loads is a lot easier to find, and you can handload it down to any level of recoil that you want.

I bought my 13 year old daughter an ESCORT 20 gauge youth model for Christmas for $300. It is built like a Beretta and will shoot 3" shells.

I have been pleased to date (she has killed a pintail and greenhead with it) and ammo is a heck of a lot cheaper than a 28 gauge as there are precious few options for waterfowl ammo for the 28.

You're going to have a hard time with 28ga. steel. Just ask the .410 guys. I bought my son a Beretta Auto. 20ga. He doesn't even feel it.

You got some good advice.

I've taught lessons to quite a few youth shooters. Let me suggest 20 gauge over the 28 gauge. Finding ammo & even good hulls to reload is a problem with the 28 gauge. You'll have a much better selection in the 20 gauge.

The Beretta 391 series is lighter than the Rem. 1100 & also more reliable.
I've started kids & ladies on the Beretta 12 gauges with very light 1 oz. or 7/8 oz. shells with no problems. You might even want to consider the 12.

Chances are good that the stock will need to be altered. It's much easier to shorten a wooden stock than a synthetic one. I've got a fully adjustable stock for a Beretta 391 I use to fit students, then I know how to modify their stock.

After looking for 28 ga steel I think the majority of you are right on the 20 ga.

Anybody got a youth 1100 for sale, I need a right handed model and a left handed model.

I figure I can always add a limbsaver recoil pad and maybe even upgrade the spring.

Doc, don't rule out the Charles Daly Auto 20 Ga.. I got one for a back up gun a couple of years ago from Wally world for 300.00. I love mine and enjoy the heck out of shooting it.. And just for comparison it sits next to 4 Citori's and a Cynergy..

I just saw the CDaleys on the Wally world web site 20 ga youth 22" barrel for 309.00 I just left the OB store and that guy is checking in to wether they can get them in Left handed model or not.

My wife has a pair of 20's you can borrow any time. A Beretta 303 with youth stock, and a Browning Gold Dove Special with a shortened stock, both with kick eez pads. If there is anything in this world that has less recoil with a 7/8 oz 20 guage load than that Browning, I would love to meet it.

I've shot a few 1100's over the years and they are good guns, but if it was time to buy my twin girls their first shotgun I'd look at the Beretta 3901 20 RL, it has a reduced length stock and is basically a Beretta 390 with a rounded receiver, and the 390's are among the most reliable auto's I've been around..... that's just my 2 cents....

glad you're girls are getting to have fun with their dad...my 2 are asking to go hunting all the time, but they'll only be 4 in February.... Guess it's almost time to track down a place with a pit where they can get some easy hunting in....

I shoot a 390 and absolutly love it. As a matter of fact I am wearing out my second one as we speak. The first took about 10k rounds before the barrel needed replacing. So I just bought a new one.

I will look ino them. That way when they get older I can buy a bigger stock and they will still have a great gun to hunt with.

I had forgotten about the 3901 RL. I had 2 kids I was working with who got them when they first came out a couple of years ago. They were only available in 12 gauge then.
