I went saturday....passed on sunday. Lots of birds, lots of water and difficult to hunt. Our group (four) came away with two birds. I did not have the pleasure to see the "bucket hunter" but I did see some other strange things.

Did you use a layout blind?

The bucket hunter killed 2 fatheads and a gadwall by himself saterday...shot a box of shells. The bucket hunter killed a spoony and a gadwall on Sunday, again, shot a box of shells. His partner killed 2 greys and 2 spoonys. If your on a levee...youre in the wide open, even with 4 layouts layin' right next to each other and brushed up. The bucket hunter tweeked his knee or would have been dove shooting from the middle of the pond instead of the levee like the experts where doing, so, how many did the pros kill again
Y'all have a nice day

Gotta love public hunting........... Spooky call shy birds and the bucket hunter didn't make any real difference, cuase he was gone when the down pour started. HM is interesting to say the least. A scratch around hunt at best-especially with the fine WMA folks stacking three hunting parties side by side and no one hunting any of the middle units, but hey it's not for the hunters, it's for the ducks!

bucket or not all I know is the curse of the donkey is with me the last 3 hunts.... maybe I'm trying too hard (more than likely trying to hunt too many spots without spending the time to scout, somebody said it before, you can only kill a duck in 2 places, where he wants to be and where he don't mind going I haven't been in either the last 3 trips), but it culminated Sunday in my first "goose-egg" in over 2 years....
as for HM it doesn't matter how you hunt that place (unless you are sitting in the water among some of the standing beans) you are going to stick out like a sore thumb.... might as well sit on a bucket.... and the fact that it's impossible to compete with live ducks adds to the frustration....

Heres the story...My partner with the 4 wheeler had ta cancel. Instead of stayin' home, the 41 year old fat guy went huntin' even though the weather guy said it was gona be pouring. I went with my waders, 2 calls, a box of shells, 8 inflatable decoys in my backpack, my gun, my bucket and of coarse a duck strap to carry my dead dux. This was more or less a scouting trip. By looking at the map these ponds look like your average catfish ponds, well, they aint. They are 160 acre ponds...HUGE. There is no cover. After bumbing a ride halfway from some fine boys from Byrom, I walked the rest. I sat on my bucket at first light while catching my breath and resting my knee. I waited 2 minutes past shooting time and shot my first fathead. Hit em the first time and missed em the second. He lands in the pond 100 yards away from me. I know he's a greenhead, so, off I go after him. On the 4th shot I killed em dead, after a death march through the 12" water. By the time I got back to my bucket, I thought my heart was gona explode, so, I sat on my bucket to catch my breath. While doing so I shot my second mallard. He landed on the levee about 15' from me. By then im feelin' better so I laid on the levee, where I shot a gadwall that splashed in my decoys. When the weather started gettin' close I packed up and hitched a ride from 3 other fine young men that where from Pontatoc...they had ZERO dead dux between the 3 of em. Now this shooting at everything that flew by bit... when I can see a pintails split tail is atleast 6" long, he's getting shot at...period. Now when I flat out miss him 3 times...Im the first to stand up and say my shooting sucked...wich I did on another thread. Coulda, shoulda had a limit, but, I went ta crap. I invited everybody on my way in to come on over if my spot looked good and their spot sucked...nobody came. The dux flare over the levees...not because your sitting on bucket, but, because they are levees...thats where they get shot at. If somebody best idea is to hunt that place from a layout on the levee...they are sadly mistaken. A bucket in the middle of the pond, or, a Predator type blind is THE way to go...period. I figured out after about an hour that the dux dont turn to qwack or a hail call...they did turn to whistle. Turned plenty of em too...sometimes they where to high, but, they did turn. If I was a young guy that didnt kill crap with all them dux in the area...I guess Id be hatin' on old Ducks Be Us too. Over all, I had good hunts on both days...and, killed dux...even from my bucket...period. Y'all have a nice day
P.S...Blackduck, after taking several Advils, my knee is feeling better today...THANX. GordonGecko...It was a pleasure meeting you sir, hope we can do it again sometime

Mudsucker called me and said you needed another person on the hunt (especially someone with a wheeler) Well I was out a deer camp with a piece of metal the size of a Alaska sticking in my 4 wheeler tire or I'd come sit on a bucket next to you.. Glad you got some ducks..
