An earlier post has me wondering....

Postby fireplug » Fri Dec 07, 2007 11:34 am

The post earlier from Wingman that went into the battle about children being tought the right and wrongs of hunting and shooting got me to wondering.

When you were a kid, what gun did you start out deer hunting with?

Personally I started with a single barrel 410. I didn't get to use a riffle until I was probably almost 12 and my dad had to be sitting beside me then. Just had me curious as to how many had to use shotguns only for a long time before graduating to a rifle? I graduated to a 20 ga, and then 12 ga, and then finally got a rifle of my own after I was much older and mature enough to use it.
Just curious..... and I'm bored

I killed my first 6 deer (all slick heads) with my trusty ole 20 singleshot. Shot them with slugs never had a deer go anywhere after being hit by it

Learned what to do and what not to do with a gun with a Daisy BB gun at 5-6yrs old. Poor Cans :( .

Then at 10 I went through hunter safety, shot 20ga slugs and then moved up to a .270.

.410,then a Model 7 243 , then a model 7 7mm08. I have a 7 mag now but if I do carry a rifle it is usually the 7mm08. I use my stick and string almost exclusively now though.

bolt action 20 guage then moved up to rememingto 1100 12guage, but at the same time i was hunting with ruger 44 rifle. When my brother bought him a rifle, i graduated up to a 30/30. I remember that 44 kicked hard so you always made sure the first shot did the job.

The first gun my Dad ever let me take deer hunting was a Revelation 20 gauge single shot. I was 8 and I can't tell you how many deer I shot at with that gun\ and never cut a hair I grew up dog hunting so you didn't get many shots at deer standing still. I don't remember ever sitting on a stand by myslef with that gun. When I was ten I got a 12 gauge 1100 and I thought I was in high cotton. I had five shots and there were several instances where I used them all. I killed my first deer with that gun. When I was 13 my Dad finally gave me an old Remington 742 30.06 with a Leupold scope. I learned a great deal of respect for firearms at a young age because my father and the rest of my family with whom we hunted treated them with respect. Firearm safety was a process that was ingrained from the time I was given my first BB gun.

Started deer hunting with a Ruger .44 mag carbine, but I killed my first deer with a slug from a 20 ga. Ithaca 37 Deerslayer, which also happens to be the gun that got me my first duck.
