I watch him occasionally on the idiot box on Sundays. Usually for 5-10 minutes or so. He seems pretty charismatic and intelligent. Last night he was on Larry King Live with his wife. Their "church" seats 15000. That is almost all of Ole Miss. Just wondering what everyone else thought of this guy?

He's a false teacher, plain and simple, itching the ears of thousands upon thouands of so-called believers leading them further and further from the truth. He doesn't even know what he believes much less understand the ramifications of the "faith" he professes. DO NOT buy into what he's selling.
You can watch him falsely present the gospel on "You Tube" if you wish. His doctrine seems to have come from the bottom of a Cracker-Jack box.
The Bereans would have eaten this guy alive!

Do your own research. Don't just take my word for it.

That's kinda what I figured the response would be. Being of little biblical knowledge, what exactally make him false? Not stirring the pot or defending ole Joel, just wondering.

I am beginning to distance myself further from
organized religion. Never have believed anybody
standing up telling me how to live.

I too have always been concerned with organized religion. Finally my wife talked me into going to a CoC here in Jackson. They made me feel more at ease with my concerns. One of the preachers favorite messages is that as a church we are "Sinners Anonomous" Meaning everyone sins and no one sin is greater than the other.

While down-playing the unregenerate, totally depraved, sin-stricken state of his target audience, he tries to fix their earthly problems and feelings with a mixture of secular and pseudo-Biblical solutions, and then he'll slip a little Jesus in at the end. It's the old bait-and switch. Osteen's gospel is feel-good hype that largely ignores and fails to accurately address mankind's greatest need--forgiveness of sin--and presents an ungenuine faith that will not lead to salvation upon death but to eternal punishment, seperated from God the Father, never to be reconciled--hell.
I realize that I'm being quite general, but, as I said before, do your own research. Test your faith, and see for yourself if what you believe is in accordance with God's written word.
7"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened."
--Matthew 7:7-8

Its hard for me to listen to someone that I know and know they are only human. A man of the cloth character is tested in his position. I have seen too many give into the flesh, but still be self righteous in the aire he puts on. I feel these days that the truly callen individuals are fewer and fewer. Kinda like a Jackson police officer doesn't really fill out the job description but gets a check. OK maybe thats a little far, but you get my point. Not trying to fuel a debate. In my last few churchs the pastor has pushed away more than he pulled in. I know in my job if I did that I wouldn't have a job.

I am not a bible scholar but there are references in the bible to the abundant life that believers will enjoy. Joel Osteen teaches a literal interpretation of this. He teaches that if you are a Christian then your life will literally be better her on earth - finances, career, health, etc... A lot of people do not believe that teaching. You will have abundant life in heaven but you cannot expect to be healthy and rich just because you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior. The disciples lived miserable lives and most of them were killed because of their beliefs.
He is more of a motivational speaker.

I am not into the prosperity preaching either. All we can hope is that he motivates people to join their local churches were they can learn god's message.

He's an example of what organized religion is coming to today. The sermon is mostly a motivation and self help speech. There is little or no mention or interpretation of what the Bible says when dealing with certain issues.

I have seen him on tv 2 times. It's ironic that before he tries to preach he has a fancy saying about what the bible is and then never revers to it again. He seems to be more of a motivational speaker. The reason the seats are full is he is saying what people want to hear, not what they need to know.
Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.

Wasn't he the one that was asked "Do you believe Jesus is the only way to Heaven?" and he responded something like "Let's don't get into that right now."
I never have watched more than 5 minutes of his "show". I really don't know what he preaches.
