Another training question

Postby pntailhntr » Wed Sep 12, 2007 9:20 am

OK, I'm gonna get ALL you losers knowledge and then I'm gonna take all the training work in MS and run you all out of business!!  Damn I'm funny!!!

OK, NEXT Question, since I've been getting ahead of myself, and after you read this you may say WAY ahead of myself. I've been working on sitting then calling here and then sitting 1/2 way. He will sit, but he creeps untill I'm almost at him with my arm in the air hallering sit. How do i stop the creeping and get him to just sit. I'm putting my hand up, and taking a step toward him and commanding SIT, just to let you knonw how I'm doing it. Any other time, I say sit, hit butt hits the ground. Is this something that is just going to take a while to do, I've been on it for a couple weeks and he still creeps. Very smart dog, maybe a little hard headed at times but takes onto things faily quickly.

Man I need a training group. I know you told me to call you HGH but I just don't have alot of time to run my mouth and I'm not much of a phone talker, hate it. Do it all day, I'd rather read it or type it. I may get around to calling you though, I wrote your number down.

I would burn the dog to its butt hit the ground. Sit means Sit.
Seriously though it sounds like you may want to pick a program doesn't matter which one. I can tell you that if you don't, your not being fair to yourself and damn sure not the dog. You will continue to find holes in your training until you get a program and stick to the program.

pintail - don't get frustrated ....... stay calm

you may just need some one on one .....

when all else fails get creative :) Okay, seriously not everyone makes a great parent initially - sometimes you need parenting classes .... or someone to show you how to get control of the dog ....... hard to diagnose what is going on ......but someone to read dog behavior and also get you off to a good start ....... just show you some basics would probably do you wonders. Are you going to any hunt test ?? Theirs one at Grenada and theirs a lot of people there who would be willing to give you some 30 minute sessions that would keep you busy for a few weeks at least ......... make a drive - look us up

This is a common problem...you've taught the dog to go to you on "Here" now you're wanting him to stop in the middle of that action. My current pup was doing the same thing. An Amish technique would be to put a check cord on pup and around a post or to a tie out stake BEHIND the dog so that you can MAKE him stop with the cord when you blow the SIT whistle or say SIT. Or you can wait til CC and teach/enforce then.

Pntl you should try getting Evan G. smartworks vol. I and it has enough information to keep you busy until this time next year! It has the tech. that MD11 is talking about if you don't understand his layout. And like Faithful R said burn his booty!! because sit means sit whether it is by your side at heal or half way back in an ant bed!!(that would be cruel) (That is if your dog is CC) Good luck. I will be over in Greenville in a couple of weeks if you want to try to get up and meet and train a little while I am there.

Good luck and keep asking questions, none are dumb and whether you think it or not there is probably someone that would like to know the answer to the same question.

Have you REALLY got your pup to understand the whistle sit?? Sounds like you may be rushing a little bit. Make sure he understands clearly what you ask of him and give no GREY area you are only gonna confuse him more and will just take longer to correct. Sounds like he is confusing the come here with the whistle sit and you may be just screwing his head up especially if you got a collar on him.

Is it ok to "Burn the Dog's booty" if the dog and the trainer are not sure if the dog understands what he is needing to do? IMO, no. Even though he knows "sit", and knows "here", doesnt mean he "fully" understands the concept of stopping halfway between here. The creeping shows that.

Working on this right now with my pup, keep in mind I am a rookie and this is only a suggestion.

May need to just give it a little more time "With the Whistle" getting a crisp sit on the whistle. Keep it short to keep more control over the dog. Sit him, walk away, "here", then an abrubt stepping toward him and hitting the whistle, followed by a "Sit". If he sits good, give him praise and step back another 20 feet, repeat, repeat, repeat till hes got it 110%. Then stretch it out more and more, and apply the collar pressure if needed.

As drake demon said, keep asking the questions, it's making me think about what I am doing, which may not be the best way, but it is working for "Me" and "My Pup".

Take in as much as you can from everyone you talk to, then apply it to your training method that best fits your dog. I use the programs as only a step by step guide for the concepts to build upon, there is a reason for their order. The way I relay that concept to the dog may be different depending on how the dog takes to a particular method.

I may just be an idiot and have a ADD dog that is on the same wavelength as me.

The same thing is not as effective for all dogs. The rope around the pole is time tested. Some other options are:1) drag him back to where you told him to sit, tell him again and pop him on the butt with a healing stick 2) get him on a check cord and whip the cord to cup him under the chin. It helps if you have a chocke collar on him where the metal is poping him under the chin. This only works at close range but you can transfer it to the shock collar later "after you know he understands it."

Good luck, hope one of em works
