Forward Progress!!!

Postby lhharris » Wed May 30, 2007 7:43 pm

Hello Everyone. I just wanted to give an update on "Nicki's" status and maybe get a little more direction. She is 13 weeks and will be 14 weeks Friday. I work with her 2 times everyday, just fun retrieving. In the morning we do about 6 land retrieves and in the afternoons we mix it up with land and water. She is really doing good, and is shocking me how hard she will go after the dummy both on land and in water. I have worked on a leash everyday for about 250 yards then do some fun retrieves. She is Heeling really well. I have her sitting and staying at 200 yards without moving until my command "Here." I am so happy that i might actually have a good dog. I dont ever overwork her but if i put the dummy in my pocket she will stare at me almost begging me to throw it again, so the desire is def. there. So my question is what do i do now if anything. Just trying to do my best with her. I thank everyone very much for taking the time to respond to my post. Thanks again, and God bless. LH

work on being steady when you throw.......people will tell you build drive build drive.......but your dog has drive.....be steady and then drive !! Your dog will always be a much better marking dog the steadier you can keep her. Once you have her taught to be steady on marks.......then start teaching handling .........you can sit her one or two steps in front of you and throw bumper to left or right or back and then cast with a voice command. Start blinds.........its never too early..........get creative !!

Since you live in Oxford, go by Wildrose Kennels and buy their training video.

How wrong..........wrong.........wrong...........Ever heard the saying that you can always take some (drive) out of them, but you can't put it in. Poor pitiful advice.

It's a 14 week old puppy.......are you an idiot? Start blinds?

I tried to take up for you earlier, but you have now proven to be a complete moron. Are you blond?

Please don't listen to this missinformed chic.............

set a pile.......thow a bumper to identify the pile......your pup will want to get it.......send her on her name or back.....once she is there and been back .......start sending her on back......guess what your dogs learned a blind. Hey, someone got an HRCH 10 months old....so there is no reason not to continue on if the dog is looking at you and wants the bumper you got the cat in the bag .......if your dog isn't steady that is a down hill battle......my dog never got to retrieve ever until I sent him on his name ..... and he always wanted to go .....and always had drive.........teaching them to go when they want.......that goes against everyhting your gonna tell the dog from now on........I am in control.....not you dawg.

ever wonder what happens to those 10 month old wonder dogs? last time I saw that 10 month old wonder dog, he had just bolted out of a land series, and the handler was under the dog trailer trying to get him. I think someone got bit, not sure.

Your dog is going to start teething in a few days/weeks. its probably gonna put an end to 'blind' training. Stop retreving during that time, and soldify your obedience. don't bore your dog with sitting while you walk 200 yards... add distractions and temptations instead. find a program and stick to it, beginging to end. asking what next questions on the net, and getting a dozen different answers, is sure to end with a dog with holes in it. travis

I tried to give her a chance, but the ignorance on her part keeps coming back up......

This takes the cake.......

You are so right about that teethin part. Important not to make your pup hurt during this time. It is kind of a dead time just keep inforcing that obedience. you can reward them by getting something soft like a sock or something to keep it fun . good to know she is doing well. Listen To goosebruce.

okay damn it boy, you want a piece of me .........

how about instead of criticizing what everybody else writes ......that you offer some advice. You never answer what the question is on the post you just always post that whoever responded was wrong. What would you suggest this young fellow do with is 13 week pup ? Where is your dog training advice ?? Come on, advice him ......don't advise me......I put on there on my post that someone will disagree because people think you are suppost to let the pup break for a year and then teach it to be steady and they want to know why their dogs don't mark worth a crap ..... have you ever seen a dog really mark? I don' t mean run out there around the bird......... I mean run out there and nail their front paws on the bird immediately.....no hunting it up. THat is marking. A triple with paws on the bird ?? And you can't get that with a dog that is jumping around at the line.......or unsteady......never going to happen. Your the moron and everyone on this site thinks so........... I didn't believe it........I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt but you go way out of line !!!!!!! its okay to say you disagree.......but come on.........your out there man You can't be right about EVERYTHING . Shut up and open your eyes to some training concepts that you might haven't considered. Try throwing an orange bumper instead of a white one all the time and see if your dogs marking doesn't improve. Or are you like Jimmy ...criticizing but don't even own a dog ?? As far as the 10 month HRCH ........I never seen the dog run or anything.......I can't imagine how they are getting that young of a dog to that level.........that's beyond me !! I just heard about the dog.....or the title I will be the first to say that someone can train way better than I aspire too.......

there aint no pup that don't want to play......and its just as much fun for them when you send them on their name and make them be steady as it is if you let them rip around and go on their own......... and no they aint going to be steady every time when their 8 weeks......but thats when I start every time holding their little butts until I say their name......and you know what.........they always want to go......they learn to go fast when you call their freakin name !!!!!!!!! And they learn to be steady and you know what else they learn to watch first ..........then run. Hmmm........what a concept ........ tune in tommorrow for dog training 101 explained to damn it boy........its going to be a long year for the viewers........
thanks for covering my back reaper !!

Remember its watch first. Then run. Command ...correction......command

You can take that advice to bank and second
WHOA cheeseburger DAM
Sounds like you got a nice pup and I promise you can ruin one before you realize it. I got some good advice myself this week. Its a marathon and not a sprint, you got time. She is still a puppy so you got to keep it fun and it sounds like you are. Don't get too technical and make sure each play time you leave her wanting more. I am telling you this from personal experience. I have been down this road before and it ain't fun when you burn one out. It is hell making them realize its fun again if they ever lose that thought. She learning plenty right now experiencing new things and by the little fun retrieves. I am no expert, but I can guarantee that you don't want to push right now.
If you want a new trick for her and you haven't already done it, bring out the whistle and get her sitting on the whistle and coming to the whistle. Just fun don't put any form of correction if she don't want to do it. Just as you have been saying sit, say sit toot, then walk away here toot, toot, toot. You get the picture.
