Looks like Mahannah's going to a draw. Also changed deer regs. to 16" spread or 20 " main beam.

My thoughts exactly gator. Mahannah was like my camp. 10 minutes from the house, and never had many hunter's to compete with during the week. Always hunted at least a couple of mornings each week before work... Not any more. Looks like i might turn into a damn deer hunter.

Has this been actually decided upon yet? The link was to a "proposed" rule change, with allowed written comments and allowed participation by objectors at a public hearing during April.

I haven't hunted WMAs much, have never set foot on Mahannah and don't plan to go there. One thing I have heard about that place and others is that it is often unbearably crowded with rude shooters.

Wouldn't a draw system solve some of the problem? Or is it more desirable to continue the free-for-all approach and hope that the crowds aren't present on the days that you hunt?

I think they should draw on the openers, or draw all weekends for that matter, but there's really no reason to make it a draw during the week.

I haven't hunted this WMA but this sounds like a good idea for weekends and openers that way the locals can do as they please during the week.

I got drawn for a blackpowder hunt at a WMA last year and the GW that was checkin the deer in said that more than half of the people didn't show up.

It's a sad day... Why don't somebody post the infamous video...so cool! Shesh!

Even on its crowdedest days wasn't really a problem to get somewhere away from the craziness. Hope you clowns are happy now...It was inevitable, but there's a guy, I think, could stop all this if he just would. He might have stopped a draw at another place was the rumor we heard if he just would have...being so respected and all...but oh well...it's their ball game. Truly an amazing place despite the crowd or even with it. One hunt a year, maybe now, wonderful.

Before I get too far gone I hope there will be a changing of the guard in Jackson in both the fisheries attitudes and now in waterfowl looks like. Sign of the times I guess. Heck they're gonna make Lake Bill Waller a "draw lake" when they reopen it in Aug., for cryin out loud... fishing draw! Respect for these managers is waning...IMO.

Now Hambone, you know it's never better to have the gov't involved in our decision making process.

I'll admit that I've only been there one time in recent years. I really just wanted to see the improvements that DU helped orchestrate on the property. I went in at about 9 am till shooting time one day during the week, the area that I hunted didn't have any other hunters within a very large radius of my position.

The problem with a draw is that I or anyone else won't be able to get a wild hare and just show up to hunt there now. Not too mention the fact that the crowds that chose to tough it out year after year, will be forced onto other nearby public lands. I sure hope some of these other nearby places that I like to hunt don't suddenly absorb all the Mahannah overflow.

On the flip side, I suppose that I will put my name in the hat for some draw opportunities at Mahannah now. If I get drawn, I could probably sell tickets to hunt in my group.

Of course, keeping the government out of the decision making process is almost always the best approach. But since it's a government-owned place, the government is necessarily involved.

Though it would be hard to enforce, maybe a shell limit is a better way of regulating the crowd...say 18 catridges per hunt.

i contend there's a very doable solution (if there's really a problem)......it would allow for easily enforcing but not requiring extra man-power......it would save money in road repairs, be envrionmentally friendly, and i can assure you, the problem people would weed themselves out..........and, those that "just do it cause it looks cool" would be GONE.

it would allow the "common man" to hunt the same way he always has..........allow for the spirit of of hunting to continue w/out undue "regulations".............and, it would allow someone who "just wants some peace and quiet" to get it ---------------- if he REALLY wants to....

that solution???

get rid of ALL MOTORIZED VEHICLES....boats, trucks, 4 wheelers ---- GONE.

the WMA in question has a "main road".................so do several others. FINE........drive your bike/truck down it, but STAY ON IT. you wanna hunt the back corner????? fine.............have fun walking.

same w/ every other WMA/NWR. main roads, fine.......if it doesn't have a main road, but rather "parking areas" in which you get on a bike and go further in........................................while everyone else has to listen to the idiot that drives, and drives, and DRIVES allfrickinmorning.............NO MORE.

piss on a 5 a.m. start, you want it, you want it bad enough ---- go get it at 1201 a.m...........piss on a 15 shell limit..............you wanna carry 2 cases of shells so your sky bustin ass can shoot a duck????? FINE, have fun luggin that schit in.

58 dekes in a timber hole????????????? fine, enjoy.

you wanna scout???? MAN THAT'S GREAT....get your old fat assed out there and SCOUT...........learn about the quarry vs boating up to a raft of ducks or driving up to a hole of mallards....

"let's go walking mississippi!"

you want regulations?????? that's FINE TOO! every WMA/NWR has a 12 o'clock STOP time......you wanna scout (walk) somemore, FINE....but the gun better be cased, in the truck............give the damned birds a rest.
