Hey Brad:
Tell me more about your Pagosa Springs trip...I used to guide elk/muley hunts in that area (up Coldwater Creek/Hell Creek/Piedra River drainages- Units 77 and 751) and I am interested in an archery elk/deer hunt this August/September...I'd appreciate anythign you can share with me about turkey hunting in that area and if you know anybody taht might be interested in going on a archery hunt this fall.

Hammer, we are hunting a friend of ours place which is located almost center of the national forrest right outside of pegosa. The place is called "square top ranch" (after the mountain on the property that has a flat top) which is within eyesight of the continental divide. We are staying at his river house on the san juan which has a view that i cant even begin to explain. Im actually in the process of tryin to book a bowhunt in sept but the cowboy that we know has been kicked in the head to many times that he cant remember if he has any openings. He said he thought he could probably handle 4 the during the 2nd week but is gona get back with me to let me know for sure. Today was our first morning to hunt and we had a big beautiful Merriam (sp?) by 7:30am He had a 9.5" beard and 1" spurs and looked to be over 20lbs. It was definately a hunt to remember......28 degrees, 3 strutters gobblin their heads off in a big medow, the sun had just got high enough to start meltin the day before snow (yea i said snow), and was the first time i had ever seen someone have to let the elk clear for a shot instead of other birds! No video but have some great pics ill get on here in the next few days. We had planned to do some fishin but due to the recent white stuff the water level and current is gona make it tough.
Rio
Brad,
Are you guys hunting with Phil P.??

No doubt about the scenery....Phenomenally beautiful country...I was thinking in terms of a DIY, public land bow hunt or maybe a minimally guided hunt in terms of the outfitter furnishing horses and a spike camp or cabin...Possibly even take my 5th wheel camper...I definitely want to keep costs low to conserve for definite 2008 Osceola and possibly Goulds hunts...Please let me know how your fall 08 hunt is shaping up and rest of the story on Merriam's hunt.
