Pretty slow day for me and Quackfeind till this pair showed up. First thought black now not sure. Hybrid maybe? The drake is going on the wall regardless.

Looking like two black ducks to me.......... A good look at the wing would defenitely lock it in.

I'll pull the hen carcus out of the freezer and get a few images of her secondaries. The closeup was in open shade and the "Feind" shot direct sun and the bird looks a lot darker there. I've studied it from every angle. Bright legs, whitish tail feathers, female orange & black bill, lack of internal markings, crisp light edges, white outline on speculum. On the mottled side the drake does have a clear yellow bill, chin appears unstreaked. So who knows?

The close-up only shows a hint of white boarder on the speculum but it is there. I didn't mess with him much (after he was shot at close range with 3" #2's) Ha! but I'll get a better image.

mottled duck.
I don't think it is dark enough to be a black duck.

Looks like mottled duck to me. I think the head/neck needs to be darker, see how it is significantly lighter than the rest of the duck. Could be wrong though...

I think the answer to this question would really help as if you killed it somewhere besides Florida or coastal Lousiana or TX then I wouldn't be questioning too much as it's probably a black.

I'd say a mallard hen AND a mottled duck. Hard to tell on the lighting. They do not appear to be dark enough to be a black duck though. The head is to light on the Mottled duck to be black duck.

Mottled with the Yellow bill, Mallard Hen with the orange/black bill

Never Mind, NOT a mallard hen, no white bars on the speculum. I do not believe it is dark enough for a black though. We need wing shots of both birds. From that angle the orange/black bill could be a Gadwall hen
