Planting

Anybody have any suggestions as to what (if anything) can be planted on about 40 acres this late in the summer to get ducks in. My lease is on a field that was insure farmed (abandoned) very sparsely w/ corn. Water is not a problem. The adjacent propery is 200 acres of rice on the east and 200 acres of soybean on the west. If we can't grow anything this late will the ducks still want to come in if we have water? Thanks.

About the only thing you can plant this late is japanese millet. It usually needs to be planted around the end of August. It takes 90 days to mature.

Hawkeye is right about the millet. You say the land was abandon with a little bit of corn. What else is growing out there? I would spread some millet anyway, but you might have a good stand of wild millets and grasses. With rice on one side and beans on the other it sounds like corn should never have been planted in that soil. It would be beneficial for you to go ahead and spread about 200 lb per ac. of urea on some of the areas you want the millets and grasses to grow.
Other options would be to poach on the rice or the bean fields.
