another heartworm case

Postby kaustin » Fri Nov 17, 2006 6:11 pm

Took my three in for their yearly checkup to get it done before duck season. Kipp positive, Jake and Tink negative. I just had a bad feeling since I read yall's post.

heartguard on the 9th of every month. I've got a reminder on my phone. The vet is getting the documents together to make HG pay for treatment but that is beside the point. Like all of yall I've spent thousands of dollars and countless hours with these dogs. The thought of having to "poison" my baby just kills me. I'm very worried about my other male that stays in the kennel right beside Kipp. He tested negative this time, but in my research I saw where the incubation period can be 6 months before they show up. They were all negative in January. My plan is to get Kipp treated now, hunt Jake, get Jake retested after the season and hopefully have Kipp back ready for late spring test.

...again... My self and another respected pro have been on "Zimectrin" (ivomec) for 10+ years, keeping/training LOTs of dogs with ZERO incidence in South Louisiana (mosquito haven). I'd be scared to death to use ANYTHING else. When I get a new dog in for training, the first thing it gets is it's ivomec dose. I tell the owners to keep the heartgard for when pup gets to stay inside. Yall spread the word... seems like every week I hear of more heartgard/worm cases.
I Hope your pup comes through ok. Good luck to you and her.

Just a thought...we recently raised sheep over the past 5 years and of course a sheep's greatest enemy is worms. Used to be the practice was to drench (give wormer medicine) every so many months regardless of the animal.

Now because worms are becoming resistant to the medicines (and no one is researching new sheep wormers) the practice has gone to worming only when the need is there. Sheep are checked for worms using a practice called FAMACHA by looking at the membrane below the eye and judging the redness. Less redness or pale indicates an anemic situation and the worms are succking the blood in the intestines.

I realize this is different for dogs, but I wonder have much these worms are becoming resistant to heartguard. How often do they research and change formulas.

Just some thoughts, unfortunately no answers.

Use Ivromectin and be done with it. My dad has raised beagles, labs and walker hounds for years, and he has yet to run across a case of heartworms when giving them Ivromectin.

I'm taking Kipp for his only hunt of the year in the morning. We start treatment next week. Hopefully the duck gods will cooperate and give him plenty to pick up. Heartguard is picking up the bill for treatment.

dam billy, I hate to hear that.. I know you were looking forward to a big duck season with her. get her better so we can train on that tech pond this spring. and if you hunt somewhere you need a dog, holler. maybe in the meantime SOMEBODY will come up with SOMETHING that PREVENTS heartworms.

kenny, I remember you bringing kipp and jake to the house, and thinking you were crazy for having 2 puppies. looks like we all need a couple to help our chances of having one that can hunt.

gh22, theres been cases reported with dogs on straight ivermectin too. it may be better, but nothing is 100% anymore.

Sorry for all who are dealing with this issue.....It has almost become a daily thing now hearing about this crap.

Most of these heartworm cases I am hearing about are dogs that were on HG. I have switched to Interceptor. Hope it works.

How much time are these dogs spending outside? My dogs stay inside most of the time unless they go out to go to the bathroom or are out working.

I know a friend's dog stays in the house most of the time and he is dealing with the same thing. He was also using HG. Just curious.

I have increased the frequency to once every 2 weeks. Just crazy. Sorry to hear about that Billy.
