had a bad night last night...
Came in from work and it was raining pretty good so I came in the house and waited until after supper to go and get the dogs out of the kennel. I walked out and turned on the water here at the house, this usually is enough to get their attention but they were not barking or jumping at the gates. I walked down and shined the light into the kennel and saw Ace jump down from his platform but no Rouxby. As I got closer I called her thinking she was in her drum.......nothing. And then I plum got sick on my stomach when I saw her gate was not latched. I freaked out. I immediatly ran to the truck and got my whistles and start calling and shining the light around the yard and fields surrounding the house. Nothing. I ran inside and told my wife Rouxby was gone and grabbed my keys and headed for the highway to see if I could find her, all the while praying she was off in a field or at a neighbors house, or even picked up on the highway by someone. I thought that if someone found her there would be a chance of getting her back. I then called my buddy that lives down the road about half a mile, as I was pulling into my drive. I asked him if he had seen Rouxby or a dead dog in the highway that afternoon. He said "no" and then said " well I did see one early this morning" and told me where. By this time I was about to throw up. I pulled down the road a bit and there she was. Or what was left of her. Boys I'm gonna tell you, It's been a while since anything tore me up like that did. I picked her up and carried her home and barried her. I called Jason and told him the news and he rode out to help. My wife and I spent the rest of night tore down............And then my wife says that she remembered coming down to the kennels sunday night while I was washing down and feeding and told me that Rouxby's door was not shut good. I remember saying ok but never went back and latched the gate. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!! I guess you can say I killed her. I know $#!+ happens but I could not sleep last night for guilt pressing down on me. Man this kills me! Damn fine dog.....plain and simple. She would have been 2 this February and I was excited about carrying her hunting as she never got to pick up a wild duck. She got her HR this fall and was really ready to run finished and was planning on hitting some early test this spring and getting her qualified for the spring grand. Gonna take a while to get over this.
Rest in Peace HR Roux's Jewel O'DA Bayou. You are and will be missed.

Man I hate to hear that.
It nearly makes me sick and I don't know either one of you.
I got my first pup a little over a month ago and I have really gotten attached to him and would hate to see something like that happen to him.
I'll pat Major on the head extra tonight.
Sorry to hear about your loss.

Sorry to hear that. Mine pulls a houdini trick every once in awhile, has gotten out 10-15 times since I've had him. Either he's been knocking the latch loose himself or someone has been letting him out. Not a good feeling when you come home a week or two later to find out your dog has been out for days, luckily never getting run over.

know this! you are right when you say @#$@ happens. I've been there, it only takes one wrong move. the regret is unavoidable, but guilt and blame are things that go with intentions. this is the definition of an accident. the only things your guilty of... are raising her from 7 weeks old; giving your time and effort to teach her how to be the best at what she was born to do; and just owning such a damn fine dog.
I'm even more glad you ran that waterblind friday... we're friends because of these dogs, and it makes me sick to think about yall going through this. 'sorry' doesn't seem like enough, but I can't think of anything better right now.
