1 hunt test and several bourbons from now!!!
that's my magic number til I/we (gauge and myself) get to start doing what we were put here to do ------ kill fowl. 17 days til Trapper gets his first taste of blue norther' blood. 17 days til i take the shell i've lived in for 10 months, look it in the eyes, kick it square in the sack, and attempt to stack all things fowl up like chordwood.
i just got to thinking about what my season will entail, and i gotta tell ya, i'm as pumped for a duck season as i've ever, EVER been.......
this year, i'll hunt ducks in the central, mississippi, and atlantic flyway..........from the uppermost reaches of the western section of the PPR to the killing fields of rice in arkie, to the swamps/sloughs/oxbows/timber of the south mississippi delta to the lobster and clam infested waters of the cape cod region. to top it off, i'll most likely hunt w/ a slew of interesting characters that'll bring tears to my eyes from laughing and will burn images into my heart that can't be counted....dog's will do what dog's do that are train to hunt down the beady-eyed tyrants from the north -------- they'll bring to back, everytime.
i'll "count coup" on mallards/pintails/woodies/greyduck by the dozens just like most other years, but the strap will also include (hopefully), scoters/eiders/oldsquaw/black duck/redheads/cans/dos gris. new scalps will be taken this year, new blood will drip from the dawg's mouth.
i'll stare the north wind in the face, i'll load and shoot, then reload my gun and tell the mofo to bring on more...........it is what we do.
as it gets close to "go time" and the temps are content w/ settling into more liveable climes, i'm forced to look on my upcoming season, remember the hard work it took to be able to "get here", and do a few things:
1) thank God for all that He has given me
2) wish each and everyone of you full straps and mighty fronts
