If these are to introduce a dog to gunfire and you want to make poppers, just buy a cheap box of shell and remove the pellets.

not for introduction, but more for getting through the breaking on gunfire that we go through during the first few hunts of the year. Solid as a rock, until you squeeze the trigger. just thought something like what's used in the trials would allow to simmulate a more "real world scenario" while training.

Just baught a couple of boxes from bass pro in Jackson. They are called poppers or field trail blanks. Gun dog supply will have them as well.
Days end amkes a reload kit for primer loads which are way eaiser on the ears.

You might try teaching the gunshot as an obedience command just like the sit whistle.
Teach sit
Introduce the whistle.
Teach "Sit" "Whistle"
Teach "Whistle' "Sit"
Teach "Whistle"
Introduce Gunshot
Teach "whistle" "Gunshot:
Teach Gunshot" "Whistle"
Teach Gunshot

I like that idea - the gunshot is a sit command rather than a signal to an upcoming retreive. That would be good with my huntstyle - not every shot is a retreive
