Building a duck gun from scratch.....
Building a duck gun from scratch.....
So there I am, thinking to myself. I am thinking, if I could build any gun that I wanted for waterfowl hunting, what would I build?
So I thought some more. What if I could mix and match parts from different guns, and they
would magically fit??? And magically it would balance 3" in front of the trigger???? So, I thought some more. When I was done thinking, this is what I ended up with for my personal wish list.
Type of action:
Definitely a gas operated semi-auto. I want that third shell so I can pop cripples and hopefully someday I can get a true “3 dead birds in the air triple.” 3" only, I don’t need the roman candles, your milage may vary.
Gas operating system:
I would start with the gas system from the Browning Gold Hunter/Super X-2. I would retain the speed loading feature, but nuke the silly “chamber cut off.” The BGH is the softest shooting gas gun I have ever shot, and that means a lot to me. And I have shot them ALL. It is the only gas gun system I have seen that really will shoot from 7/8 oz to 3.5" duck loads. The BGH is also as reliable as anything else out there assuming you clean it every 1000 rounds. Definitely this gas system. And a jug of CLP. And some Q-tips.
Receiver:
Benelli Super 90: sleek, light, solid as a bank vault, very nice. Every other gun company should copy this.
Oh, and I want the bolt from the Benelli Super 90, too. But I want it in black. I like my bolts like......never mind.
Trigger:
Got to have the Beretta 391, with trigger job, no creep, no over travel, set to 3.5 lbs. The best factory trigger out there. How did Beretta goof up so bad with the Xtrema’s14 lbs of trigger pull when they started with the best production trigger around (for a semi)???
I want my trigger held in place with the single pin set up from the Benelli Super 90 or SBE. Why do I want 2 stinking pins??? Although I demand the Benelli pin set up, I want the indented Browning pin. Easier to punch. Who says you can’t have it all?
Barrel:
Beretta 391 30" 12 gauge with the flat, narrow field rib. No step rib, thanks. Why does Browning not offer a 30" barrel???? First Browning nukes the 32" target barrels, and now no 30" barrels on duck and goose guns??? Why does the SX2 ONLY come with the silly step rib? No wonder Beretta stomps you in market share, ya schmucks. Thank you Beretta for listening to those of us who don’t want whippy little guns, as well as those who do.
I like the Beretta barrels. They already come with long forcing cones. I would want the .735 new ones, and not the narrow as a soda straw .720 old version. No candy booty little glow bead sight, thank you. So, 30" Beretta 391 barrel it is, for sure. I doubt I would port this one, other than maybe just to annoy Delta Duck with the noise.
Stock:
Browning Gold synthetic in Mossy Oak break up or Natgear. Browning stocks are the most
comfortable for guys with small hands. However, I want that checkering replaced with those squishy rubber inserts that Beretta has on their new guns. I like that stuff.
If I were tall, I would want the Benelli Super 90 field stock with the more upright pistol grip, but I still want that squishy stuff. Squishy is good. You heard it here first.
Chokes:
Pretty much a Ballistic Specialties Lmod and Imod, and leave the other mess at home. None of that “Buck Rogers” 70 yard ninja choke crap, thank you. If I can’t have those, factory Remington Rem chokes almost never get beat in head to head tests.
Other stuff:
Sure cycle system in the stock. I wade a lot, and I am not overly tall, so my stock springs stay wet.
Neoprene rubber band style Mossy Oak break up gun sling. Hey, I like my redneck cache’ as much as the next guy.
Kick-eez sporting clays recoil pad. Anything else means you flunked your shotgun IQ test, and if you shoot 3.5" shells, you may have neurological damage.
So there you have it. Made from scratch. Santa Claus, ARE YOU LISTENING?????
Thankyou. Thankyouverymuch.

Is that the one that requires the purchase of a sure cycle system for proper gun workage?

GC, buddy you have WAY too much time on your hands... Sounds like Browning needs to hire you as a consultant.
And for the poster -- its no good. a photo would only frustrate you, and make it where you can't sleep at night... The real thing would be much better

I say the 390 is the best auto loading shotgun ever invented.
That said, I hunt ducks with an 870 with lot's of duct tape on it
