Anybody ever used a Duck Coffin

Postby CRAWDUCK » Fri Aug 09, 2002 2:35 pm

I am ordering a "Duck Coffin" layout boat from Riverside Products. Has anyone used one or have any experience with one? On the Website it looks great and he has some good off season pricing. www.duckcoffin.com

THE BEST BLIND YOU WILL EVER BUY!
1)Learn how to shoot while sitting; position yourself if you are righthanded (like you would position your bow stand for right handed shooting) so you can swing across the duckhole without moving your butt.
2)DON'T MOVE when they come in....and believe me, they will come IN. I have looked pintails in the eye as they are hovering 5 yards from my toes looking for a spot to sit.
If I could figure out how to make paying customers be still, I would use coffins in all of my holes.

Amen... Awesome how close you can get ducks. Facemasks are a must, and NO MOVING... when they swing around behind you, they are behind you. When you swivel dat head they leave. Facemasks and gloves are a real plus.

The lil dog coffin is nice, but you still to cover up over top of fido. Some dowels and litewieght netting do just fine, and he can still see everything.

Amazing how warm you can be in one. Blocked from the wind completely, it is VERY easy to fall asleep in a riverside coffin.

They are defiently something nice to have in an arsenal, and a different way of hunting. travis

I bought 2 of them about 6 years ago, direct from Riverside. I hate to use them (shooting in the semi laying-sitting position is difficult). But, these things are built to last, very rugged.
I would recommend them highly.

I made three of them out of wood & fiberglass resin (on the bottoms) and used them all the time in the rice field around Katy, Tx when I guided. I will attest to their value and worth was proven to me. I have had literally hundreds of pintails (skiddish as hell anyway) land between us! and have had flight after flight of geese (old snows, specks, etc.) do the same. take heed to what the others have said about movement and facemasks, use 'em. I bought some of that matgrass and used rice stubble too. I made mine for about $30 bucks each and had some older clients that told me that they had never understood what bringin' em in close meant and they had hunted for 40 years. Good Luck

If I had the plans I would. No two were the same due to some modifications to each.
These layout boxes were derived from a decoy carrier that I made with whells on it. Once the wheels broke off, I drug it with my 4 wheeler.
It basically consisted of 1/2" plywood bottom 36" wide (not tapered like a coffin), with 12" inch sides. I took a piece the same size as the bottom and cut it in half and hinged the (top) pieces to each side. Use standard 45 degree bracing in the corners. I also used my head board to attach the bottom & sides to for added support. I placed a cross support just below the knees (to keep it from folding in on you and I cut out the face hole in a half moon shape so I could prop up with my shoulders, and then slide down when birds came in.
I put fiberglass resin on all seams and on the bottom. My last model was completely resined. You can go crazy with this stuff and it makes your box slick enuff to pull with ease. The camo part was easy too, I took black rubber bungee cords and attached them to eye hooks down both sides and the tops (grind off the points on the inside) and resin these in too. The bungee cords held the rice stubble, branches, prairie grass and matt grass in place in windy conditions. I spray painted them with a camo pattern made from leaves, pine boughs, fern (from the wifes plants of course) in brown and sand colors. I always took a shovel and dug out a shallow depression to get even lower into the ground. the whole thing was pretty basic and simple with no parts to brake off (wheels dont work) or worry about.
All of my gear and dekes easily fit into it going and coming. I sold them to a friend of mine last year when I moved to the Texas Hill Country. I drew this box up in five minutes and it took me approx. three hours per box.
