I need a call!!!

I hunted ducks for the first time last year and I love it. I hunt in flooded timber in Nanih Wayah and I'd like to start learning how to call. Problem is any hunting catalog I open there are about 100 different calls to chose from. Money is no object here I've found a hobby to give me a reason to work. I see they can get pretty high in price but I've got what I feel is the best of everything else why pinch pennies now...

If money is no option, I would get a good wood call from Richntone or echo. They are very ducky sounding (I think more than acrylics). They run around 75 or 80 bucks.

dr 85 a good double reed call for under 20 bucks...you wont mind your buddies throwing it in the river. Then buy another DR85 and call more.

How about double reed vs. single reed? The acrylic vs. wood? I hear stories of acrylic not freezing as often. Lets be realistic here, I realize we are hunting in MS where freezing temperatures are not common, but better safe than sorry.

Go ahead and get a single reed (Echo Timber is my favorite) and practice, practice, practice. You'll be happier in the long run.

I've had the exact opposite experience. Have never had much problem with my wood calls freezing, but the only acrylic I had sounded great down to 32, but it would freeze at 31.5 degrees.

If money is not object, I say get you a couple of the less expensive ones and try them out. Learn what you like and don't like and practice with those till you get good enough to make a difference before you spend big bucks on a call.

Buy two. Buy the haydel dr-85 and an echo xlt or southern game boy "nasty boy". you will like the dr 85 at first better because it is easier for a novice caller to blow, however after much practice i believe you will like the single reed best. can't go wrong with haydel dr 85, an echo, rnt or southern game "nasty boy". all very good calls.

if moneys not an option hire phil robertson to sit in the blind with ya! Nah j/k i agree with go somewhere that has a good selection and blow on a few to see which one sounds the best to you. If you cant call real good yet or have been told you cant call good then get some good instructional cds or dvds.

you need to start out with a good double and move up to a single. Doubles are much easier to blow......and dont spend a hundred dollars right off the bat....take the advise and get a good haydels call to start with

If money's no object just buy one of everything over a hundred dollars and see which one you like best. then you still got a bunch of good christmas presents to give out to your new duck hunting buddies!!

Bunk79,
I've got some extra Echo msducks calls if you are interested in one. They are timber calls, single reeds. I can sell you one alot cheaper than what you can buy one for from Echo. PM me if you are interested.
