Need Advice on Jap Millet

Postby SoftCall » Mon Jul 22, 2002 10:40 pm

After talking to the farmer that leases the land we hunt on, I learned that he was unable to get a soybean crop in a field that is probably the best duck hole on our place. It wasn't intentional..just the way it worked out. Cotton was his priority and I certainly understand why.

We had the same problem last year - no crop. No one rented the land. We attempted to plant jap millet in mid July but it was overtaken by weeds and it didn't have the benefit of ANY rain. Needless to say, it was a bust.

I planted 300 lbs of jap millet yesterday around my pit blinds. It was hit with a disc three times three weeks ago. The weeds were starting to come up pretty good but I hope that the overseeding will give me a chance. I loaded it with about 30 lbs per acre. I didn't fertilize it because I want it to start to come up before I give the parasitic weeds any additional juice.

What do I need to do to insure that I have a good stand? Rain is certainly not a problem right now. When should I fertilize it and can anyone recommend anything else that will help me grow this glorified weed? I am not looking for some picture perfect stand of duck grub, just something to help draw the ducks.

About the only thing I guess you could do, is spray some 2,4-D for broadleaf weed control. You won't be able to kill any grass in your millet, since millet is grass. Maybe fertilize it when it's about a month old with some urea.

Soft Call I would spray the already established grasses with Roundup NOW. Roundup has no residual so it wont affect the millet BEFORE the seeds sprout.
works for me
