No need to worry about this one. It's just a Diamondback Watersnake. Definitely non-poinonous, but probably the snake mistaken for bein a Water-moccasin, and killed by Billy-Bob Bubba more often than any other. And yes, that is a big un!!!

If cornered, they will flatten their jaws and bodies. They will strike and bite viciously and repeatedly. If picked up, they will release a very unpleasant musk and fecal matter, and in very nervous specimens, regurgitating any recently eaten meal. Even after being held for some time, they will not miss an opportunity to bite, and since they a rather large snakes they have long teeth that make the lacerations bleed profusely. The treatment, however, is only soap and water. These are non venomous snakes!!

I copied and pasted that from another website......so here's my thought......you'll die from a heart attack instead of snake venom after the bites "viciously and repeatedly" and then......after you dead of a heart attack, he craps and vomits on you!!!!

RobertM - The new Snake Man???

Snakes give me the shakes bad. I used to say any good snake is a dead snake.. Kinda changing my tune after hearing the real Snake Man speak at the extragaza a few years back.. So now I will probably let them crawl on off, but that dosen't mean I have to like em....

What about that triangular head? Looks like the venom pits are about to pop!

If waterfowlwidowmaker see's this, he'll crap his britches at his computer! If he saw that sucker in the wild, we'd be applying cpr about now. Sneaker and myself got after him one day playing golf with about a foot and a half garter snake, and you should have seen that boy run.

RobertM - While some of what you found at another site is true, it has been exagerated to a great degree.

While some do emit an odor when caught, most do not, and they are not particularly vicious, and don't look for oportunities to bite.

As far as size goes, they come in all sizes depending on age and diet. There are some big ones out there, but really big ones, like the one in that picture, are rare indeed.

I couldn't tell you how many of these snakes I've caught, but it's a bunch, and I've also been bitten quite a few times, and it's not that big a deal. Does it hurt? Sure, but not that bad, and like someone said, just wash good with soap and wter, and you're good to go.

Almost all snakes have a triangular shaped head, so that's not a very reliable identification tool, but it is surely the one that has gotten more non-poisoness snake killed than any other.

Not sure what you mean by poison pits. If it's a reference to pit vipers, they are called that because of a heat seeking organ that resembles a "pit" on the side of their head. It has nothing to do with holding poison.

Makes me get the hivvy shivvy's. I don't like them dang things, not even the non poisenous ones. BANG! BANG! Dead snake. End of The Story.

He probably means the glands on either side of the jaw of a poisonious snake that produce the poison. These glands give the snake the diamond shaped head because of their location.

Yes, that is what I was referring to.

That snake wouldn't scare me twice, regardless.
