just a thought..... read bigwaters post in the other thread about free stuff/players getting $/etc....
this was told me to a few years ago by an MSU fan, a very big MSU fan, can't say that i really agree or disagree with him one way or the other, but it is food for thought. His idea was this, 80 %+ of college athletes tend to come from lower to lower middle class families, and generally speaking, most students (regular students from those income brackets) generally have to apply for large loans, get a job, etc to make ends meet. Since the NCAA has ruled that you can't have players living in an exclusive athletic dorm, and the players don't get the large federal loans which cover much more than tuition (housing, food, etc), nor do they have time for a job, why not increase the normal athletic full scholarship to cover a few extra living expenses. His argument was that even though the players on scholarship get free meals, and can live in the dorms under scholarship, living in the dorms as a soph., junior, senior etc, then let them apply for small loans or work out a large enough monthly stipon to help the players out. Another side of is argument was that it might entice the players to stay their full eligibility thus gaining a college degree, instead of going straight pro after their soph. year if eligible, or 3rd year when pertaining to baseball players. He was unsure if you could entice enough to compete with professional money, nor do i think you could. again, i don't agree or disagree with it one way or the other, i can see his point in it, was just curious everyone else thoughts on this.
