GC, Dos Gris, etc., how is the salinity and clarity?

Postby Meeka » Wed Jul 03, 2002 10:30 am

I have to work the 5th, but my partner is itching to get in the marsh and so am I. I went for several days weekend before last and , let me tell you, times are hard. It seems like the wind has been blowing for months. It was rough as a cod and most of the water is dirty. Junior said the water in the area south of Isle Au Pitre was not like chocolate milk, but worse.

What do y'all think?

Dave: The clarity over here is pretty low. The salinity is low also, due to all the rain recently. I would not let that stop me from fishing, though.

The water is pretty good here around Slidell.
The clarity changes from day to day because of the thunder storms. Not a whole lot of rain so the salinity is up (they have been seeing Bull Sharks in Lake Pontchartrain). Hit and miss on the fish along the Lake Borgne shore line. Some good specks, reds in
the usual places, and flounders on the mud flats. Hope you have a good 4th. Jack

Clarity is getting great, water has been extremely calm the last few days. Went out of Venice and could have water ski'd from Venice all the way to 79 mi. out where we were fishing. Very Very calm. Salinity is kinda low near shore, but that isn't always a bad thing, won't bother redfish too much unless it's real low, trout it will move, but they will just move further out. I'd say go out and hammer em.

I think the storms have been so plentiful that not many boats can even get out to fish the Miss. tournamnet. I got a good report from the beach a fourchon yesterday a.m., so Jr. is gonna drive over from Meridian and we are gonna go. It'l be like old times before we got these boats. Last time I went though, I found a body washed up. He still had his baits in his pockets. It ruined his group's fourth. We drove back by after fishing and they still had not taken his body away, and it was hot. Not fun. Lesson = don't drink and wade, especially near a cut like that.

Hey meeka
I have been fishing Isle au pitre quite a bit lately, and the fishing has been good, mainly around fifer's key. Chandeleur has been slow for s few weeks now. Let me know how you do.

My boss caught 56 out of Slidell last Tuesday. Also had a friend that went out of Breton and had pretty good trips Wed. and Friday. Its been hit and miss with the winds. Things may get right later this month.

Dos Gris, I have a question for you, but couldn't send you a PM. The rigs I have been fishing for a few years have gotten crowded. My and my fishing partners have kinda gotten in a rut. We found a rig several years back that was real consistent for us and we got lazy and forgot that we found it in the first place by riding and trying.

I was wonderin if you have ever done anything around Point Chicot or if there are rigs out past (East or South) there anywhere? If I can get Dry Creek to get me a relay switch for my trim and to figure out if I have trash in my line, I'm gonna try to check it out this weekend.

For the next 10 days, I would say you got a 100% chance of having to dodge one. If you don't like the weather on the coast, just wait 15 minutes......

I have booked a trip to Venice for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. According to Capt. Brent Roy of Venice Charters Unlimited, the speck and red fishing down there has been great. This time of year, there is always a 50% chance that you may have to dodge a thunderstorm or two. The water clarity is suppose to be in good shape. I look forward to this trip every year. We always bring back a cooler full of filets.
