Best time for breeding?

Postby Chuckle » Tue Jul 02, 2002 2:42 am

I have asked this question a thousand times and have recieved a thousand different answers, but here goes anyway. What is the best time to breed once the female comes into heat? I have heard anything from a week after she goes into heat up to three weeks later. Any info would a great help! We already have 13 pups from a previous litter by my male, but we left them together for three solid weeks immediately after she came into heat. Don't really want to do that again (missed my boy too much much).

Answer #1001: When the bitch quits acting like she's gonna rip his 'fool' EARS off!

(I don't happen to know the exact time-frame....I'm sure a more helpful answer will be forthcoming.)

It is usually between 10-14 days after she first comes in heat....and like Anatidae said, when she quits acting like she is going to bite his head off.

As soon as she "stands" and moves her tail to the side, the time is right. Too bad humans can't communicate so honestly and effectively.

Ten days after you see blood. She will be "standing" then or soon thereafter.

I like to breed at least 10 times per month. I made sure that was in my pre-nup.

10 days is what I have gone by in the past. You might check with your vet and look into Progesterone Testing. This will tell you when your female is most fertile. I can't remember what the exact numbers are that you look for, but your vet can tell you. This is particularly important when using Artificial Insemination, Frozen, or Chilled Semen. It is also a great tool for natural breeding. This way you find out the most fertile time. Since sperm live for two days inside the females body, you have a window to work with.

Sounds like nature did a good job last time!!
