OXFORD, Miss. — Barring an injury, Brent Schaeffer will indeed be Ole Miss’s starting quarterback when the Rebels open the 2006 season Sept. 3 at home against Memphis.
Schaeffer told The Commercial Appeal this morning that he learned over the weekend that he passed all of his courses necessary to graduate from The College of Sequioas, the California junior college he was attending. That means Schaeffer, who will be a junior, will be eligible to play for Ole Miss this fall.

Schaeffer had to graduate to play for Ole Miss, and that required him to take a heavy course load during his final semester.
‘‘I had my work cut out for me, but I grinded it out,’’ said Schaeffer, who did not specify what his workload included.
With that behind him, Schaeffer, Ole Miss’s top recruit in a nationally ranked class this year, can turn his attention to returning to the Southeastern Conference. He began his career at Tennessee and played as a true freshman before a season-ending injury. After an off-season suspension stemming from an arrest for misdemeanor assault, Schaeffer transferred to The College of Sequoias.

Last year, he threw for 2,940 yards with 40 touchdowns and just six interceptions, while also rushing for 854 yards and 12 TDs. He chose Ole Miss over North Carolina State and Wisconsin.

In addition to his heavy course load, Schaeffer was busy studying his Ole Miss playbook. He had constant contact with Ole Miss offensive coordinator Dan Werner.

‘‘It seems like a pretty good offense,’’ he said. ‘‘There was just some different terminologies, but it’s not the first college playbook I’m having to look at.’’

Schaeffer said he will likely come to Oxford later this week and enroll in the second session of summer school, which begins July 3

Unless he can hover he is going to have some big problems with the o-line. However, there is no doubt he will be an improvement on last year.

With UMs weak schedule I think they can win 4 or 5 games.

If he gets hurt, which is fairly likely IMO, who will be his backup?

I realize that a recruit graduating and becoming eligible really should not be that big of news. But, in light of all the rumors that Shaeffer would not qualify ---- being repeated over and over on radio sports talk shows and on opposing fans message boards ----I thought it important news to dispell any of these rumors.

There has never really been any serious concern about Shaeffer becoming eligible. He did not leave UT due to grades. He qualified out of high school at UT. He just had a good bit of catch up work to do, transferring from UT to juco. Because he had to graduate from juco to become eligible, he had to take a good many hours of couse work and a correspondence course or two to make it to UM by second semester of summer school. But, there was never any real concern that he could not do it.

Looking forward to seeing Shaeffer in the red and blue and under center this fall. Hotty Toddy.
