REBS Beat Cuban National Team in SR Opener

Postby Po Monkey Lounger » Sat Jun 10, 2006 10:21 pm

REBS take Game 1 of the SR in Oxford over the Cuban National Team (aka Miami) 11 - 9. Rebs were down 9-3, but came back to tie it in the 6th inning with the highlight being a Mark Wright 3 run homer. Then, in the 7th, the Rebs added two more runs to take the lead for good.

Will Kline started the game, but was pulled early for Craig Rodrigez. CRod lasted until the 8th, when Garrett White took over and pretty much shut down the Hurricanes for the last 6 outs. CRod got the win. White picked up his 11th save of the year.

Big Win to get things started. Huge, vocal crowd ----too large for fan comfort --it was insane. Just proud to have survived. I'm getting too old to sit on a steep hillside, clinging for dear life, with a limited view, for 9 innings.

Get ther early and take a chair and rolling cooler. Its nice. Engineer your chair so that the back leg on your right as you sit is an inch and the other side is 3 inches. front right is about 5 inches and front left is about 7. Then you are angled to the right pointed right at second base. 8) enjoy.

Worst part for me is I have to drive to McComb after a 6 o'clock game ends.

Kline looked to be leaving his fastball up over the plate; probably a lot of nerves going ong. Rodriguez came in and did a great job of shutting down the Hurricanes.

Meeka, after my experience at the game in the outfield at the regional, I DID have specially crafted chairs to sit on the hillside. But, I still had a couple of slides downhill trying to get the chairs set up and entrenched into the hillside. And, I got there as early as I could ---30 minutes before game time. Had the wife with me, and I had to administer an afternoon shot to a diabetic dog before I could leave ---gave the shot to the dog as early as I could, before leaving for the game. Just too many folks. No way any more could have fit in the outfield areas. From where I had to sit, I could just barely see over the top of the fence ---could see the players, but not much of the field. Could not see any of the outfielders. The dust and all the kids running around gave it a carnival feel to it. But, having that many fans at the game is a good problem to have ----just hope the UMAA moves forward quickly with improvements to the stadium to increase the grandstand seating and improve the outfield areas with more terracing, etc. The slopes out there are really, really steep ---- a legacy from the Gerald Turner regime ---he purposely had the slopes graded steep and planted all the pine trees to prevent fans from developing an outfield atmosphere similar to MSU ---the very type of atmosphere that we are developing now.

Enjoyed the game, but won't be going back today. Will watch on tv and grill out tonight at home.

Kline was not as good as he had been in past games, but the inconsistent strike zone being called by the ump had a significant part in that, IMO. I did not have a good view of the much of the park, but I had an excellent view of the pitcher, home plate area, hitter and the strike zone. The ump was extremely erratic in his calls ---no ryme or reason to it ---changed the zone from batter to batter, pitch to next pitch.

Hopefully, the ump crew rotates for each game, and we will have someone behind the plate with more consistency today.

I did not go to the game yesterday and won't go to the game today. That stadium is completely packed and I don't like sliding down the hill all afternoon. I will watch it from the comfort of my living room with a cool pop.

I did like it when Mark hit the game tying hr to the right field crew. Beer and cups were flying everywhere

rebelduckaholic ---those cool pops and UM's comeback were the only things that made that situation tolerable ---with a two run lead and good buzz, I almost didn't mind all the dust, busting my ass, and having hundreds of screaming kids running around ---almost

I live approx three miles from the stadium and my living room watching it on the big screen with some Colorado Koolaids is about the only way to go.
