The Tuscaloosa Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (N***) is proud to announce the Alabama State Turkey Calling Contest will be held July 15, 2006 at the University of Alabama Ferguson Student Center Theater in Tuscaloosa, Alabama from 11:00am to 6:00pm. The Alabama State Turkey Calling Contest will attract some of the nation’s best turkey callers to Tuscaloosa for this test of turkey calling aptitude. Turkey calling contests, such as the Alabama State, are a way for those who play the spring game against the tricky wild turkey to weigh their calling ability in friendly competition with one another. Each caller is asked to reproduce three to five calls from the turkey vocabulary, which are scored by a panel of accomplished turkey hunters and callers on the nearness of the calls to the real thing. Sometimes the calling is so good you would expect feathers to start flying off the stage as every gobbler in Alabama tries to get to that lusty hen turkey.
The Contest will feature the Alabama State, Open, Open Friction, and Junior divisions. The State division is limited to Alabama residents only, but the Open, Open Friction, and Junior divisions are open to residents of any state. The State, Open, and Open Friction divisions are limited to those 21 and older, and the entry fee is $50 per division. The winner in each of these divisions will qualify for the 2007 Grand National Turkey Calling Contest. The Junior division is limited to those 20 and under, and entry fee is $25. All divisions will payout 100% of entry fees as prize money to the top three finishers, as well as a trophy to the 1st place winner in each division. For audience members, general admission is $5.00 and free to kids 12 and under. Many door prize drawings will be held throughout the day including calls, apparel and miscellaneous hunting gear donated by Knight & Hale, Westervelt Wildlife Services, and more. The Ferguson Student Center has a food court, store, and other facilities available to attendees of the Contest. Parking is available on surrounding streets, lots, and for $0.50 on the upper two levels of the Ferguson Center Parking Deck located off of McCorvey Drive.
We are expecting a large turnout of some of the finest turkey callers in the nation, and we encourage everyone who loves turkey hunting and all who wants to learn more about turkey calling to come out. You will have the opportunity to learn how the best of the best call Mr. Gobbler, and maybe pick-up a trick or two to try on a wily ole gobbler this next spring. The Tuscaloosa Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation hopes to host you to a day full of gobbler fooling turkey talk on July 15th in Tuscaloosa!
