Let's hear 'em - Cowbells in Bulldawg Country

Postby Double_R » Sat Jun 08, 2002 3:54 pm

Jackie says they'll ring em on the Jumbotron if nothing else but how can the officials possible levy penalties for ringing cowbells?! Start penalizing the dawgs everytime they hear one ring - how will they ever know it's one of us or the other team? I can see it now - a rush on teh cowbell vendor by every visitor to God's Country on game day!

They are going to ring them, no matter what. Just a lame attempt by the SEC President, Robert Khayat, Ole Miss homer, to try and get rid of them. Heck they've been banned for 30 yrs, and that hasn't stopped them. The main problem: officials will not know who is ringing the bells. Put this in perspective, MSU, 1st down & goal, 5 yd line, go ahead TD against Tennessee and all of a sudden, bells start ringing, and guess where who's ringing them, volunteer fans. Ain't no telling how many Ole Miss fans have bought cowbells over the past two weeks cuz of this new rule.

I hate to see them go. how else can you make 23,500 people sound like an SEC crowd?

Seriously, VRLS's (VCR Repairman Location Systems) really are an embarassment to all Mississippians and I would be glad to see them go. At least with the piped in clanging an unfair advantage will not be gained as the operator can refrain from "ringing" during the snap. Now, moo-U will have to rely solely on buying players as a means for attempting to get a leghump up.

that's a good idea gh22 about other teams ringing the bells to penalize msu..but like meeka said, no self respecting ole miss fan would ever be caught with one of those redneck, I mean msu, noisemakers..We'll leave that to Tenn and Alabama..

hey MC, yep he said, "self-respecting" Ole Miss fans. But the thing about it is, there aren't many self-respecting ole miss fans.

I hate to say this, expecially as an Ole Miss fan but the cow bells are just as much a part of SEC football as Bear Bryant was. It is little things like the bells that make the SEC great. What would an Alabama game be like with out the Tide boxes with a roll of TP duck taped to it be?? THink about it, that is all the fun stuff outside of the game, that is just as stupid as banning tailgating. I think the great "DOC" has opened mouth and inserted foot.

Odds are an alum who got him the job made him do it. POLITICS what else is there to say???

The next thing that will happen for "Saftey Sake" is cracking down on pre game festivities and the students being subjected to breathalizer test as they file into the stadium. Just how restrictive do you want the SEC commission to be. Kinda takes all the fun and pageantry out of college football, doesn't it?

There you go again, Greenie. You well know no self-respectin ole miss fan would EVER lay hands on a dang cowbell, 'cept when tendin stock or takin one away from a young gun clangin one and giving himself and those around him a headache! Just one more example of how the dawg fans improvise when they can'yt get by playing by the same rules everyone else does . . . they break the rules. I say lets just put them in a conference by themselves. They can have a set of rules tailored to them. Nobody else can get in the conference. You caint put them in with the Longhorns cause Texas always wins.

Meeka, if you are going to ban artifical noisemakers, then do it, conference wide, not just for one team. Tennessee has their big speakers blaring and Auburn can pump it up too. You honestly don't think that some Ole Miss fans wouldn't sneak in cowbells and use them to get State penalized more, you're crazy. Especially in scoring situations inside the 20. Even the SEC head official said that there will be no way to penalize State in the games. This new rule is a joke, but moreso of a joke is the SEC President "Dr." Robert Khayat, cuz he doesn't have a Phd.

Well they took the rebel flag from ole miss so you know that they had to take something from state to make it equal. It think it is all in good sport, why mess with stuff that has been around for so long.

GH22 you better hope they don't make them turn down their loud speakers, then MSU wouldn't have a way to ring those bells. The rule is NO ARTIFICIAL NOISE MAKERS. The loud speakers can only be played at a certain time. That is all they talked about on Southern Sports Tonight yesterday. I believe that 15 yards everytime after the second time is pretty steep. If the dawgs get a 15 yard penalty everytime those bells are heard then they will surely finish the season with a total of negative offensive yardage. They barely move forward as it is. GO REBS!!!! Cookmducks -

Your post is the most logical post on this board! Thank you for being honest and realizing that noise is a part of college football and it is just a tradition that is a part of State. The cowbells, while obnoxious to some, are a part of Miss State that wasn't started 2-3 yrs ago. That tradition is over 60 yrs old. The thing is, the bells never mattered when State was the typical homecoming victory.

I also think that most fans of other schools will never admit that there are no more than 5000 - 7000 cowbells at any SEC game. The ONLY time there are significantly more is when we go to a bowl game and the officials of that bowl ask us to bring them. Yes, they are loud but to claim that there has ever been 35,000 cowbells at a game is ludicrous.

The new rule says that there are no artificial noise makers allowed INSIDE the stadium. Since the North end zone is open, I say we set up something like the "Left Field Lounge" in that new parking lot, which is OUTSIDE the stadium, for cowbell ringers only, and ring the you-know-what out of them!
