Date set fpr Dove season

Postby JMallard » Wed Jun 05, 2002 12:39 pm

What does everyone think about the opening of Dove season on Sun., Sept. 1 @ 2 p.m?
This was set yesterday.
I think it is good, don't have to miss MSU beating up on Oregon Saturday.

Was that the final decision, and who was it decided by, and can it be changed? Any help would be appreciated. Everybody needs to know for making plans. Those dates sound great. Also, when will the first season end?

Yep, that was the final decision. They still haven't decided when the season will end.

Notice the last line:

--------------

June 5, 2002

Panel intends to start dove season Sunday at 2 p.m.

By Bobby Cleveland
Clarion-Ledger Outdoors Editor

Mississippi's 2002-2003 dove hunting season will open on a Sunday afternoon, the state's wildlife commission decided last week.

At its regular monthly meeting Thursday in McComb, the Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks issued a Notice of Intent for the season to open at 2 p.m. on Sept. 1.

Due to the way the calendar falls, the traditional opening day, the Saturday prior to Labor Day, was not available.

In 2002, Labor Day is on Monday, Sept. 2, which means the preceding Saturday is Aug. 31. The North American Migratory Bird Treaty forbids any hunting of migratory birds prior to Sept. 1.

Commissioners considered three opening days, Sunday Sept. 1, Monday Sept. 2 and Saturday Sept. 7.

"The main thing, obviously, was that we'd had people request not opening on Sunday morning because it would interfere with church," said commissioner Bill Pittman of Columbia, who has one month remaining on his second five-year term. "Opening it at 2 o'clock gives people a chance to go to church, get home and get to the hunt before the birds start flying in the afternoon.

"It was also important not to lose the Monday hunting opportunity, since Labor Day is such a big part of the dove hunting tradition. We didn't want to wait until the following Saturday."

The commissioners did not establish the entire dove season or its splits, only the opening day. The complete season can't be set until final frameworks for early migratory bird seasons are released by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

"We went ahead and made a decision on opening day because we knew we'd be facing that decision sooner or later and because we knew it was the day people wanted to know."

A one-month comment period is now in effect. The Commission will have to file a final notice at its June meeting.

Judge,

I've been out of the loop (office) for a while and actually been in the field working. I know the commission met last Thursday and the dove season opening date was a topic. Those three possible opening dates are correct. I'll check on the opening date tomorrow, but I feel sure what Bobby Cleaveland said is correct. I'm sure you won't hear too many CO's complain about the Sunday at 2:00 opener. They (we) won't have to be in the bushes so early to catch those people that just want to "sweeten" their field.

True story: Officers go into a baited field on 4-wheelers to take up hunting licenses for hunting over bait. Officer pulls up to hunter and ask him for his license. Hunters ask what is wrong. Officer says that a hunting violation has occured for hunting over bait. Hunter say he didn't know the field was baited. Officer asks the hunter to look down at his feet where there was shelled corn lying all around his feet.

The weekend of dove season you can't count the ATV's on trailers that pass hwy 49 in front of my house. I always enjoy that sight...I know winter is coming when the ATV's start going up and down the road behind vehicles loaded with hunting gear.
