Things are looking up at UM......

The campus is in full bloom ---the plants and the co-eds.

The baseball team is doing better (although there is still much room for improvement).

It appears that most of our signees will likely be eligible for this fall, particularly two immediate impact type defensive players ---J. Powe (DL) and Rory Johnson (LB). Those two could possibly start, or at least provide some sorely needed good quality depth.

Cliff Davis, a highly sought QB recruit in 2003 from Eupora, MS, who signed with the Tide, but opted to play professional baseball instead with the Astros, has recently been released by the Astros and has decided to play football for Ole Miss. He received his requested LOI release from the Tide, and the public announcement was made today. He will be considered a walk-on, even though his tuition will be paid by the Astros per his deal with them when he signed to play pro baseball. He is 6-5, 225 lbs and is 21 years old. After he knocks the rust off over the summer, he should add to the QB depth at UM, providing some more insurance in the event Shaeffer goes down ----or he could even seriously challenge Shaeffer for the starting nod (that would be a long-shot, IMO, due to his 3 year hiatus from football). He has 5 years to play 4, and can still take a redshirt year.

Coach O recently added a 12th commit for the 2007 class --a big DL out of Georgia, who is considered a highly sought after recruit. While UGA thinks they can bring him back into the fold if they want him, we shall see. But, I like the fact that Coach O seems to be attracting the attention of the big uglies on the DL ---- a key to winning titles.

The Rebel tennis team just locked up its 5th straight SEC West title. I only wish we could dominate like that in one of the big three sports.

I will stop now, so I won't start sounding like Big Gumbo and his glowing piggy reports. BTW: I am not predicting any football titles based upon this new information ----just pointing out some things that will definately help a dire situation.

Po, ya'll may now have an edge on Miss St. on not being the worse team in the whole damn league.

We had one of those highly sought after hs QB's that went pro baseball and then came back, McBride was his name, never panned out, he's at Ark Tech now and suffered a major elbow injury that just may never heal up right. 1 in 10 make it back to form if they come back to football. Just My opinion,

Oh, and D-Mac ran a 4.26 in the spring, good gawd ya'll, and get this he's dual threating it now. Ouch for opponents. Only thing i'm predicting is that we finish ahead of Bummer

"1 in 10 make it back to form if they come back to football. Just My opinion, "

I didn't realize there were that many former pro baseball players coming back to college to play football. Can you name at least nine who didn't make it?

I still remember Weinke at FSU; Booty at LSU; and wasn't that recent QB at LSU during 2003 Mauk? a former pro baseball player that went back to college? All of these guys were pretty darned good.

I am not saying that Cliff Davis is a shoe-in or sure thing, but the young man was an outstanding HS QB, with a good arm, and has no arm problems to my knowledge (not reason he left Astros org.). He is a great athlete and I predict will make a significant impact on our football team before he graduates. I am tickled that he just fell into our lap. Great pickup by Coach O.

While I will hold my predictions on SEC football until August, I will go ahead and predict right now that the Rebs and Dogs will finish ahead of the piggies. Why? Defense primarily, and the QB and new OC situation at Arkansas. C. Dick returns, and one could argue will be better --- and granted he was good enough to beat the Rebs and Dogs last season, BUT, I don't think he will be that much better in an entirely new offense with a new OC ---- Mustain, as good as he is, will not be that effective as a true frosh. Meanwhile, the Rebs and Dogs are both poised to have really good defenses next season ---- much better and deeper than in 2005. And MSU will have a QB at least as good as Dick or a frosh Mustain, and UM made a significant upgrade at this position with the recruitment of B. Schaeffer.

I don't know about most of the signees being eligible this fall, just saw Several Signees Scramble to Qualify on rivals. I think that Powe will and same with Johnson, but there nine signees that have yet to qualify. It looks like two signees for Ole Miss are a long shot to qualify. I believe Ole Miss will be much improved from last year. While Arkansas will fall a bit, if at all possible.

According to Coach O, and to most of the knowledgable folks who follow recruiting in Rebel land, there are only approx. 3 who may not make it ---and one of those is the Juco OL McFadden. I do not know who the other two are. Out of 25+ signees, that constitutes "most" to me.

And I thought I was full of shiite. Get ready cause you ain't seen nothin yet. Its not so much a guy named Mustain i'd be thinking about, its his teammate that need all those stats possible, Mr. Williams, the one that decommitted form Florida, the ones that had Florida's Urban back up here pleading not to change his mind. We got so much backfield it should be a controlled substance. Our defense is way ahead of last years squad that was getting pretty good toward the end.

Sorry Bigwater, I won't let it happen again. But, things are so bad right now at UM, and tennis is the only thing we are really good at. Now, if I start providing first hand reports of tennis matches, it may be time for an intervention by some concerned friends.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yada, yada, yada ---didn't you say this same thing last year? A one dimensional offense will never be successful in the SEC ---the defenses are too good. Arkansas' offense will only go as far as the QB allows it to ----just like everyone else's offense. If a first year OC with a true frosh QB lights up SEC defenses this season, it will be a first in the SEC. I would not count on such happening this season.

Po,

What is the deal with the Clarion Ledger. The report card for MSU is better than the Rebs.

Does anyone know if this is a report card that is based on the teams prior years performance or is this just how well they think the positions are relative to the rest of the SEC?
