Reports I got from TN line to central Delta were poor first season (could it have been 2 hurricanes in one month?)
Second season there were tons of birds around the rice and bean fields but by then, only the hardcore dove gunners are hunting and the rest of us are hunting other animals.

The hurricanes killed the first season. I had an eight acre field near Natchez was seeing about 150 to 200 birds on it at a time up until the day before the storm. After that I killed about 20 birds total for the season. That was all the birds that I saw. Hoping that will not happen again this year.

The MDWFP is currently planning on continuing its MDWFP Private Lands Dove Field Program. We are currently in the process of securing fields for the 2006 dove season. Last year there were 8 fields across the state. Hopefully, this year there will be even more. All the fields sold out last year. Turnout out was poor opening weekend due to Hurricane Katrina. People’s priorities either changed when Katrina hit, or they didn’t have the gas to drive to the fields. It appeared that fields in the northern part of MS had a better turn out than the south MS fields, probably because the gas lines at the stations were not as long.

You might think I'm kidding, but we do consider trees when evaluating a field, especially dead trees. Doves seem to really like the dead ones
There was one dead pine on the edge of field I looked at today. It had one old buzzard in it.
Problem is, there aren't always enough dead trees to go around. Somebody needs to invent a dead tree decoy they can take to the field with them.
