Sportsmen Called Upon to Help Motel Chains See the Light
One of this country's largest economy hotel chains has entered into an agreement with the nation's largest animal rights organization.
Accor Economy Lodging, the parent company of Motel 6, Red Roof Inns and Studio 6, is actively promoting two programs of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) - "Pets for Life" and "Disaster Recovery."
The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance, the nation's leading sportsman advocacy group, contacted Accor to voice its displeasure with its promotion.
Accor's Director of Communications, Gayle Colston Barge, told the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance that the business has "elected to officially contribute to and support" the two HSUS programs. She further stated that it "is proud to support the efforts of the Humane Society of the United States."
The Alliance urged the business to end its promotion of HSUS because of the organization's work to eliminate all hunting, trapping and most other uses of animals. Despite this request, Accor Economy Lodging did not end its relationship with the animal rights group.
"When you support an organization, you support everything it stands for, not just the parts that you think are good," said U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance President Bud Pidgeon. "Accor Economy Lodging needs to realize that HSUS is also promoting anti-sportsman issues and continues to work to end America's hunting heritage and other forms of animal use."
Despite its name, HSUS does not oversee any local animal shelters or societies.
Motel 6, Red Roof Inns and Studio 6 are affordable motels utilized by many sportsmen while on hunting and fishing trips.
Sportsmen and sportswomen can express their extreme dissatisfaction with Accor Economy Lodging's promotion of the HSUS by contacting George Le Mener, President and CEO, Accor Economy Lodging, P. O. Box 809092, Dallas, TX 75380-9092. Phone: (972) 386-6161. Fax: (972) 702-5996.
The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance protects the rights of hunters, anglers and trappers nationally in the courts, legislatures, at the ballot, in Congress and through public education programs. Dear Accor Economy Lodging,
Every year when it starts to get cold I start to travel. Every weekend my friends and I travel all over the Mid-West in pursuit of ducks, geese, quail, pheasants, deer, elk, and the myriad of other wildlife that is so abundant in America. We drive exclusively, and we have always stayed in you hotels. The price is right, the accommodations are clean, and the service is usually good.
When traveling for my company I always stay in Red Roof hotels. We have a corporate account, and I have a frequent user card. Our relationship with you has always been a good one until this point.
If your decision stands I will make sure that my company will never use your hotels again, and I will never stay myself when I go hunting. I am not alone by any means. I am the treasurer of a conservation not-for-profit organization, and we will begin a campaign against your company. You must not be aware of how many hunters there are, or how often we stay in your hotels, but you may find out.
You have chosen to align yourself with one of the most radical and vitriolic organizations in America today. You have thrown in with an organization that is dishonest by assuming the auspices of an umbrella organization for local shelters where none actually exists. They campaign for money using the name Humane Society (which is not illegal in and of itself) while funneling money into their legislatively active radical animal rights agenda. They shield themselves from litigation with grant money that they have gained by misrepresenting themselves. HSUS has nothing to do with local animal shelters beyond the occasional grant that any citizen could make. With an overall shortage of charity funds already, what do you expect the local shelters to do? Turn their ill gotten dollars away? Not likely. We don't have enough ourselves to counter their grants.
HSUS has a slick PR wing that has obviously hoodwinked your good will. You are free to donate to any organization that does not advocate terrorism, but you will be held accountable for political stands that you make. If necessary, we intend to make this a very costly one for you.
When your financial department was crunching the numbers of how many radical animal rights activists stay in your establishments as opposed to honest American hunters they made a huge mistake. These people contribute NOTHING to your company, while we must be a large segment of your patrons. That may end shortly. I have thousands of our members in the greater St. Louis area within my reach, and within a week they will all know what you are doing in our newsletter. They will know that you seek to destroy a part of our heritage, and eliminate the reason we stay in your hotels in the first place.
Of all the business decisions I have ever seen, this must be the worst. I cannot imagine why you would shoot yourself in the foot like this unless you actually believe in the radical agenda of HSUS.
Many of your establishments are out of the liberal cities, and in conservative, rural areas. These people will not give you a dime when they find out that you are actively working to ban hunting.
I抦 very disappointed in your lack of judgment. If I owned any of your stock I would sell it immediately. You are going to drive your revenues down by making radical political statements like this out of either ignorance, or malice towards a large group of your patrons. You may have ideological differences with your patrons, but as business people your job is not to alienate such a huge segment of potential guests.
Sincerely and never to darken your doorway again,
Peter Newton
