Cody Satterwhite Named SEC Frosh of the Week

Postby RebelYelp » Tue Mar 07, 2006 3:29 pm

*** Bill Bunting - UM athletics media relations:

Ole Miss freshman pitcher Cody Satterwhite has been named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week by the league office for his performance over the past week that saw him pitch the Rebels to a 10-0 shutout of UIC on Saturday.

The shutout marked the first in the career of the freshman right-hander, and was the first regular season shutout for Ole Miss in 21 games, dating back to a 5-0 win over Mississippi State on April 30, 2005.

Satterwhite pitched 6.0 scoreless innings to pick up the win as he struck out five batters and walked none on the day. He allowed only four hits, and no batters advanced past first base with Satterwhite on the mound. The freshman also keyed two double plays, as he notched three assists in the field.

"Cody had a terrific game on Saturday and, although he's pitched well all year, that's the sharpest I have seen him," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. "He certainly turned in a performance worthy of recognition this weekend."

Ole Miss then followed up the shutout on Saturday with a 5-0 win over UIC on Sunday, marking the first time the Rebels have pitched consecutive shutouts since four straight from March 12-17 of the 2004 season. During that stretch, Ole Miss shut out Nicholls State in all three games of a weekend series before shutting out Memphis the next Wednesday for the fourth straight shutout.

The Rebels have currently pitched 21.1 consecutive scoreless innings going back to the final 3.1 innings against UIC on Friday night.

Ole Miss will take the field again on Tuesday, when the Rebels take on the Thoroughbreds of Murray State at 6:30 p.m. The two teams will play a second game at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
