Tips for Early Teal Season

Would like some tips from all of you on the early Teal Season. I have never been. Decoy spread, calling, anything?
Thanks

When I put out decoys I only use hen blue wings and hen mallards. Down here the blue wing drakes will have no color and the hen mallards look like mottled ducks. It probably doesn't make any difference, when the teal come in they come in. If they come straight in, stand up and they will go straight up, it makes for a little better shot. Just my 2 cents.

Shoot them sprigs on their first pass!

Early Teal.
i hunt the Ross Barnett Rez, here I have seen some guys use about a dozen mallard dekes, with 6 canada floaters and a spinning wing decoy--he was was blowing a teal call. However, I have had pretty good luck with the Duck Commanders whistle and no dekes. With this setup you are very mobile and I have called the teal from seveal yards away into my lap. The calling is fun, the shooting is fast, the birds are small and fast. Good luck and try to keep your feet dry.

I use about a half dozen hen mallards, and a whistle. The deal with teal is if you figure out where they want to go, they are coiming in no matter what you do. They just bomb on in. I think scouting for teal is THE most important thing that you can do.

Jeff you beat me to it! When I saw the post I knew what I wanted to say.We went one day and forgot the skeeter dope, hell I was wrapping myself up in the boat camo netting trying to get away from em. That has got to be the most vital tip that can be posted.

Just a question, do you guys acually kill many bluewings? We usually kill 95% greenwings. Has anyone killed a cinnamon here in the south?

I just throw out no more than a dozen regular mallard dekes. Sometimes I use a teal whistle, but you can use modified quacks on your mallard hen call which works fine. But as someone said, they are coming no matter what you do...and the thing is, they're kinda dumb about it. A buddy of mine and I hunted opposite sides of an old fishpond last year. They would fly by him, he'd shoot, and they'd flare over to me, buzz the dekes, I'd shoot and they'd fly off. About 10 minutes later, they'd do it again. Great fun...and we shoot blue wings; never seen a GWT in September.

I would have to say that 90% of my teal over the years in teal season have been blue wings. I shoot the occasional green wing, but much less frequently when I am out in teal season. Now big duck season is a diff. story but early season mostly blues for me and I never shot a cinamon teal. Another report to get the blood boioing have heard of teal spotted on Catahoula Lake this week not a bad sign.

Have read some post that the Bluewings are being sighted in Ms and La. I use 2-3 canada dekes for visibility and 4-6 mallard hen dekes with a mallard call and whistle. If you want them to land, put teal hen dekes in front of your hide or they`ll mostly zip on past and return later. Pass-shooting is the norm for BWT....
