Heard this morning that 13 new countries were added to the list of those having the flu,,,,due to bird migration.


What is the likleyhood of this terrible disease making it to this country?

(Would like to hear some 'expert' opinions on this...)

No expert here but I read a couple months back that the U.S. had nothing to worry about... an "expert" said that. We will see.....

I think I read the above article too, but was referencing this past season. Depending on species affected, I'd say it's more likely than not owing to circumpolar distribution of many waterfowl species, such as mallards. Many pintail for example, breed in Alaska, which gets tremendous influx of migratory birds, waterfowl and otherwise, from Russia. Only time will tell.

Trust me--It will never come here. My job involves dealing with the bird flu and I have been to all the bird flu conferences. THIS IS 100% media related. If it comes here it will 1 maybe 2 random cases in birds, but it will not affect humans. Remember SARS and for that matter, how many people on this board got their flu shot this year. Bird flu has killed 50 people at the most. Regular ole influenza killed over 36,000 people last year. This is one shot that everyone needs and it is available, but you never hear that on the news. The problem with bird flu is the fact you have a bunch of underdeveloped communities that are catching chickens on the street and cutting their heads off and taking them home. THey are exposed, get real sick, some jackoff tree hugging, homeschooled doctor diagnoses them with a headache and they die. THen they test, find bird flu call CNN and Cooper Anderson is over there talking about this devastating disease and how it has decimated a community. Then Cooper says, what are we going to do when it comes to the US. Then they switch to Geraldo and he is in the Bird FLu/Nuclear testing site and he reports that everyone is going to die. You get my drift.

This may sound terrible (and of course, I WOULDN'T want any harm to come to any humans).......but I was more concerned about what affect it might have on the resource (birds).

But what is being said in the technical meetings to which you alluded - that it's very isolated? That it doesn't exist? If it does exist, what will prevent it from affecting US bird populations?
