Hunted with Merenisco at Willow Break the other day, ahead of and during the rain. Second duck that came in, thought it was greenhead before shooting but as it teetered off into the brush, started second guessing. Just didn't look quite right. Check it out...

Compare the tail to drake mallard (top right) and hen mallard (bottom). Mule duck, as have always heard them called, had hen-looking tail feathers, but had the distinctive drake curls...
Image

Compared to a drake mallard (top), the mule duck wing looks like a drake mallard at a glance, but note that the white wing bar above the speculum on the mule duck (bottom) extends into the terial area, as characteristic of hens

Now look at the head. Mule duck (middle) has the yellow bill color of drake and some green in its head. The bill has the black saddle characteristic of a hen and teh lower part of teh head looks suzie too.

Looked under it's tail and it was definitely a hen duck. Estrogen is a precursor of testosterone. Don't know why there was a hormonal imbalance (heard someone once say it was menepausal-like). At any rate, it was a hen I shot for a greenhead  .

what's up with all the pictures?

Every post with pictures has the nice little red "X".

I've seen them before and this has recently started.

So Ramsey, What you are saying is that this duck swings both ways. Trans gender duck! You should mount it and give it to Bigwater.

The feathers in the second picture (ones under the wing) look like a grey duck. Maybe a grey/mallet hybrid? Good lord knows we've seen everything else this year. I don't mind mules but please I hope that damn bill on a shovler never goes anywhere else. I can just see it now....

"Boy that is a beautiful sprig, Blackduck. Nice feather, good neck, real dapper color. Hell even taht bootlip bill looks good."
