Sports Afield, the 115-year-old outdoor magazine purchased two years ago by veteran publisher Robert Petersen, has announced it will cease publication with the June edition. Executive Publisher Ken Elliot cited the weak economy for the closing, saying "The two-year-long recession, compounded by the events of last fall, have limited the growth in advertising pages needed to see us through the relaunch process that Sports Afield has been undergoing."
Petersen sold Guns & Ammo magazine and the other titles of Petersen Publications, Inc. in 1996 and returned to publishing in January 2000 with the purchase of Sports Afield, with a circulation of approximately 460,000, from Hearst Publishing.

I wonder what my 1964-72 complete years of issues will be worth in about 5 years?

Kinda feel bad about not renewing my sub. a few months ago. I did not renew because it seemed that the magazines direction turned from hardcore hunting and fishing to canoeing and flyfishing in fancy little waders. I still hate to hear anything having to do with the outdoors going away.

I dont feel bad, I grew up with this magazine around the house but the last few years its gone to the pits. I dont remember if it was on here or the refuge but I remember members talking about one of the editors being antihunters. Dont remember his name but maybe I can find the post. Thats what they get. Same with Kmart, wouldn't hurt my feelings if all their stores closed.

That is the great thing about America. Provide what the people want, and you succeed. Go astray, and people stop supporting you financially and you go away.

It keeps the best, and strains out the rest.
