Sawtooth Oaks

I put this in the habitat forum also, but figured I might get a quicker response here. Has anyone ever planted sawtooth oaks for deer? I am considering getting 100 or so and planting them in stands of 15-20 on some of my land. Also, anyone know where I could get some of them. Any tips appreciated.

you can get some good ones from mdwfp, that are already a couple years old and are geared for acorn production

They produce a lot of acorns but aren't worth much for timber value. They will produce in the right conditions in 7 years or so

they may be worth something for timber you never know, but they are specifically designed for acorn production, if you plant them in groups of 15 and 20 out in fields you probaly wont get much timber value out of them

Great acorn producer deer love them will grow to about 25' in 7 yrs. If you contact your county agent he will know where you can get them.

Be sure and get some plastic tree protectors from Forestry Supply. Deer will really predate on them if you don't protect.

also remember that red oaks produce every year and white oaks produce every 2 years

not really interested in timber value, just as another food source for my property. This to me is the best way because its a natural food source which not only deer, but other wildlife love.

We planted some on skirting the edge of a large pasture. Be sure to plant them the recommended distance apart and away from other vegetation. They are now probably 5 yrs old and dumping acorns for us. Great natural food source and worth evey penny.
