Delta Waterfowl
The Delta Waterfowl meeting went well. This program is something that everyone should take a look at. Predator management is a new concept as well as other waterfowl management practices that thier research has shown effective. Waterfowl management is thier focus currently, not as much habitat management. This is new concept. This organization is not looking for the guy that hunts opening weekend and goes home for the season. Delta is looking for duck hunters that want answers about what is happening with our population. Nesting conditions are currently poor due to dry conditions on the nesting grounds. Nest success is going to be key on the grounds that do have water. Delta's research has shown that certain areas that they have practiced predator management on have gone from a 5% nesting success rate to 60% success rate. Thousands of nests are destroyed by predators every year. They are not looking to eliminate these predators, just trap them during the nesting season to protect the hens during that critical 60 day window. Foxes,Skunks, and Coons are thriving in these areas, and their populations have gotten too high for a given area. In other words they are winning and the hens are losing. The meeting was very informative, and showed some exciting direction for a Central Mississippi Chapter. I am interested in getting involved. Duckmen, Mallardchaser, and several others from the site have decided to get involved as well. More hens=more ducks=more fun for kids and big kids.

We need a spring season on Skunks Racoon and Foxes. You turkey hunters do your part while out in the woods!
Kill the little predators so us big predators can have more fun? Doesn't sound right does it?
Just a thought I know I am setting myself up for the slam but here you go.

My reply to the skunks and coon problem started with peta getting the deal started on fur trapping and trading. People use to keep the predators and other critters suck as fox under control but the decline with prices ppl just quit trapping and hunting them as much. We had a tremndous amount of coons here in mississippi back in the late eighties and early nineties then the distemper hits them and wiped a large number of them out along with a heck of alot of coyotes because of the overpopulation but coons and coyotes are quickly becomming a problem again. I dont think that fur prices will ever be what they were in the early eighties again. If prices ever would go back up then ppl would start harvesting more of them thus controlling the population. Not just here but everywhere. Correct me if I'm wrong.......

Capn' Duck:
We did have a little misunderstanding about the cost of the meal, but it was worked out.
Let's just say the owner made a wise business decsion.
