Limber tail syndrome

Postby DeltaDawg1230 » Mon Nov 21, 2005 11:13 am

Anybody else heard of this??

I hunted the pup this weekend, and when we got home, tail was tucked and wouldn't sit down. Tried to look at the tail, but the dog didn't want anything to do with it. He's at the vet right now: awaiting an answer.

Also known as Cold Water Tail - you'll find several threads on it if you do a search. The dog will need rest for the next few days, you can give asprin for pain. The dog will be fine in 2-3 days. Once this occurs, it is more likely to happen again. Some say it is a result of too much work, or work in cold water & the dog is put up wet.

I am familar with the cold water tail all of my dogs have gotten it at one time or another. But yesterday my dog had been retrieving some birds and I had him next to me in the water and was going to send him for another bird, when a flock of geese came over the trees, coming right in on us. He stayed at heel and all of the sudden he started screaming like something had hold of his privates and then jumped up into the brush next to me. After the geese flared and we missed, I brought him over to the bank and he limped like his leg was cramped. I checked him out and then he was fine after that a couple of more retrieves, went home. He has the limp tail thing going now. But I was wondering if anyone ever had something like that happen?

yes this happened to Abby this past Thursday, Thanksgiving day. We went to the training pond, did swim-by for about 20 minutes, ran a few marks. Outside temp was about 65 degrees. We were there for about 2 hours...She rode in the front of the truck on the way home. About 3 hours later her tail was hanging down and she was laying around moaning.
I gave her anti-inflammatory medicine since then and she has improved..stopped the moaning and acts like she feels better.

My moms char dog was kenneled during the thanksgiving day stuff at her house. Nothing but some morning frisbee, running a driveway blind to get the newspaper, a bath and jumping in the kennel excited. 30 minutes after we left, they called to say she was favoring her rear legs. Didnt feel anything, poked abodemn to make sure she wasnt obstucted or bloated. By the next morning, she was stiff, and tail was dragging limp... so apprently stove up rear legs can be the first sign of cold water tail. M's info was dead on track, not serious but painful and likely to recurr once a dog has it. travis

My choc female came down with it after our Friday morning hunt. Satrurday when I got up to go, she was not excited or fired up and I could not understand why. When we got there she would not sit down and I noticed that her tail was tucked. It is a little better today, but from what I can tell it is really painful for them.

Progress report:

Abby is much bettter today, she scrambled out of the house after a squirrel and held her tail straight out. Doesnt seem to be favoring it as much.

D-n-D,
I had the EXACT same thing happen to Ace this weekend. Hunted Friday morning and by late Friday evening his tail was drouping and he was acting a little different. I had to leave him at the house Saturday morning b/c of it, although he was throwing a fit in the kennel as I was loading up to go. He has acted like it was bothering him a little but it hasn't slowed him up too much. I hope this is not something that we are going to have to deal with every weekend.

Camo is pretty much back to normal, anti inflammtory did the trick. This is really strange that it is happening to so many dogs so early in the season.

The same thing happened to my choc lab Wallis on Saturday for the first time. I've never heard of it and never read about it until I started searching the web for broken tail signs. I gave him anti-inflams and he is much better today. Tails sticks out straight but thats all fro now.
Funny thing is, he is in great shape, we run together all the time. But he hasn't hit the water much this year b/c I've been in fields. On Saturday he was in water a few times then it hit him on the way home.
I'm glad you guys posted, it makes me feel much better. I hope your dogs are ready by this weekend.
